I’m pretty sure Amazon technically loses money on Prime Video, Prime Free Shipping, Kindle Lending, etc. and that’s by design.
They offer super good deals so that people get Prime subscriptions, and that’s not even the real goal. Once you have a Prime subscription, now you are drawn towards free shipping, low price “Amazon Basics” knock-offs, and other ways Amazon has essentially taken over retail and mail-order shopping.
AGS doesn’t have to worry about turning a profit. This game, like most things Amazon does, has a secret agenda of getting people to buy more stuff through Amazon.
I’ve personally spent over $80 for skins in New World. And I don’t really play the game often. Maybe like 10 hours of gameplay a month if lucky.
So, I can only imagine how much people who are New World mains are spending on cosmetics. Cosmetics is the way to my wallet. ESO made over $3000 from me buying cosmetics, GW2 made close to $1200, BDO has made over $1000, and we just taking about my personal cosmetic purchases.
New World just have to break some vision to deliver some skins that many people will spend money on. Boom, huge amount of profit to be made without P2W in just cosmetics.
To be fair, it actually feels like a paid-for expansion if you notice how it is gated:
Entering the region instant-kills you.
You need to do one particular quest that unlocks the area for you.
For a free expansion, that gating mechanism didn’t make any sense. If it costs you nothing but to complete a simple free quest, then why having that gating mechanism at all?
Easy: In other games they lock certain quests behind expansion passes you need to buy from the store. That way, that “sunscreen cream” quest is the one you buy pass for.
Then, for some reason or another, they decided to make it free.
But they left the sunscreen quest there.
Think on it… Sunscreen to get to Brimstone Sands, when we are usually covered with armor from head to toes?
If Amazon is structured into a S Corp, they can take a massive tax write off for Amazon. New World isn’t going anywhere as long as it’s generating some sort of revenue.
You lost me here and i would love to hear your reasoning behind this statement
Me alone i have spent around $350 on shop tokens plus another $80 for 2 copies of the game so ive given them $430 myself and i imagine people have spent well over me.
You know we are talking about Amazon here
We don’t know what type of strategy they have for New World and future games, it may be long term and they can afford it.
skins not selling well? Did you pay attention to how does players look when you are in ef or ww? On legacy servers its hard to find player not using shop skins. Dunno about fresh ones.
That doesn’t even get most of us in tech to the lunch break…
They need more in there. And see the thread on feminine skins for what’s needed. They need more ability to customize our characters - specifically in ways that don’t look like men. People spend on fashion and looks customization for female characters to a much larger degree. No need for skimp-wear. Just normal genre fitting feminine clothing.
They need things for people to buy. A glamor system where we buy tokens to convert gear into skins for example. A system to buy more ‘decor only’ space in housing (can’t be used for trophies and storage - just to add decoration).
And well… they’re going to have to start putting out paid DLC. People hate that about games like ESO, but it’s how you pay the bills. Amazon may be rolling in cash, but for how long will they allow a money sink?
The other thing they can sell is us… to advertisers and analytics folks. They are probably already doing this. But I’m not sure what valuable data we’re generating given what content is in the game.
There are some very basic things they can add to the shop and idk why they haven’t. Name change, character makeover kit, character slots, forever dyes (I’m not paying for a single use dye), hairstyles, transmog tokens to name a few.
Then you can get into the issues with what is on the store. Why does almost every skin look like I’m going to a masquerade? It isn’t immersive in the slightest seeing some dude running around with a white suit and a golden skull crown. It looks like nothing else in the game. Make something less flashy.
Cash shop is bad. I honestly go there every time they update it just to get a good laugh
I think a monthly subscription at $40 per month would be good. Also this would prevent bots.
Also if they add Material Package for maybe $10 per box and you get to chose between 10.000 Wyrdwood, 10.000 Starmetal Ore etc. would be nice when you are crafting.
