The game works great /w my headphones until I turn on communications. Once I enable Voice Chat, the sound switches back to my speakers.
While going through this, I did find there is a work around, but it makes the sound total crap. I have Sony WH1000-MX4 headphones. So it has 2 connections. 1 is Headphones which is good quality and 1 is headset which is lower quality. Both show in the communications settings, but the game ignores my choice. I can force the Headset choice (lower sound quality) and it works, but if I pick my Headphones choice (better sound quality) the sound does not work. This also impacts other applications, but the minute I quit the game, everything else works.
I have other games with voice chat and they work fine, so it seems to be a issue /w this game.
I have also verified game files in steam.
I can force it to headset /w windows, but headphones does not function.

Hello Adventurers,
Thank you for the report. Im sorry for the issue you have.
New World audio settings are connected to the computers default sounds input and outputs. There is no way within the game to change the audio output or input manually.
Tip:
- Check your default playback devices to ensure that your preferred device is set as the default before launching a game. Launching a game and changing the default playback device afterwards typically doesn’t work, which leads to no sound or sound coming from a source other than the one you selected.
- Ensure that the in-game volume isn’t disabled or very low. To check the volume levels, go to Settings and look under the Volume section. Adjust these as needed, but ensure that they aren’t set to 0, otherwise there will be no sound.
- Follow the guidance at https://support.microsoft.com/windows/fix-sound-problems-in-windows-10-73025246-b61c-40fb-671a-2535c7cd56c8 for further troubleshooting.
You can also do: 1. For Windows 10, press the windows key on your keyboard, then type Mixer into the field.
2. This will bring up the sound Mixer.
3. Within the sound mixer settings, make sure that the output is selected on your preferred audio output source (headphones, monitor, speakers, etc.).
4. If the output is selected correctly, please scroll down and verify that the New World application is not muted or turned down.
Check to see if the audio issues are specific to Voice Chat in-game. If yes, then:
- Check in-game settings to make sure Voice Chat is enabled.
- Make sure your character is in close physical proximity to the character you’re trying to converse with. If you’re too far apart, it can cause sound issues.
Once the computer’s default sound setting are correct, please navigate to the in-game window.
- Select Esc, and then Settings.
- Select Audio, and make sure the volume sliders aren’t set to zero.
Sorry, I don’t buy that. Other games of mine have 0 issues.
Problem persists despite running through the proposed solutions. Chat audio comes out via a different hardware device. I hear chat audio from my monitor, everything else from my headphones. Setup is an external ASIO USB Focusrite soundcard, Windows 10.
Never had this issue with any other game.
I managed to fix my chat sound. Buried in Windows 10 is a sound setting to “Set as default communication device”. I had to disable that setting on my other sound sources.
There is a good online guide here: Set the Default Communications Device in Windows 10 1803 | MCB Systems
