IMHO, NW simply just needs time. Developers need time. Players need to be patient. Brimstone Sands proves that’s all that is needed besides giving constructive feedback so the devs can do what the majority of players want.
However, I see 99% of the players giving feedback that is completely PvP centric, ignoring the fact that the true majority of an MMORPG is the PVE community. So, that is the #1 source of worry that the game won’t end up taking the right direction that could eventually bring back players in the hundreds of thousands.
Combat being PVP based is a serious/critical issue for the game followed by the lack of raids/large raid grouping. A mega PVE 20-30 man raid with multiple bosses and a world first race would incentivize the need to grind gear on the PVE side (mutated dungeons), otherwise, only the hardcore PvPers will be doing these mutated dungeons to get the most powerful gear they could get so they can easily destroy other players in PvP. Neither one of these scenarios currently sits in a good spot for the game. Most Pvpers would normally rather not grind gear and PVErs usually need an end goal to grind gear. Game is in a lose-lose situation in both scenarios atm. In WoW, pvpers don’t need to touch PvE to get the best PvP gear, why would they be OK with grinding PVE gear in NW?
Gearing in PVE with the ultimate anti pay2win Expertise system is fine, just need that ultimate end goal big bad final raid boss to grind this system for.
An OPR-like PVPVE would be amazing where two teams race against each other to kill the last boss, similar to WoW’s Alterac Valley except no PVP actually happens. This would add the player versus player competitive aspect but in a PVE setting unique to NW that can eventually be used for PVE Esports competitions.
Having competitively played almost every big MMO. I feel like something bigger than the runes system needs to be added to make PVE combat fun and enjoyable so that we stop hearing comments like “I don’t enjoy PVE/don’t get excited by PVE” repeatedly mentioned by well known streamers including the biggest fan and promoter of the game on Twtich, Danneh. A PVE-centric fun combat is what makes repetitive PVE content fun and enjoyable as evident in the top 3 MMORPG’s.
Can we please get at least ONE of the following for PVE only?
Customizable gear-based PVE-only perks system. You custom pick your two preferred perks on each one of your gear pieces so that your gear-based perks go with your weapon combo - unlockable at level 60.
Introduce perks that give weapon abilities an additional charge usable in PVE only
Allow equipping a third weapon for PVE only (NO, that won’t make it overpowered, please don’t just repeat that phrase like a robot - proven by this solo no lifestaff M5 tempest run SOLO M5 Tempest New World - YouTube )

Great post! I don’t have much time to give a big reply, but:
I like your post, nicely posted and thought-out
I agree with some bits disagree with others
Although PVP is something I enjoy more than PVE, I am constantly pushing and asking for more PVE focused content. It is the backbone of something like this… A fantastic story with engaging content outside of PVP
The Dev team are doing a great job. I was recently scared for 2023 in New World… But I’m actually pretty excited after experiencing the latest updates!
I play about 50% pve, 50%pvp.
Its annoying seeing everything right now being balanced because of pvp. The new GS comes out and already people are panicking, same with the ults.
I know in Alpha it was supposed to be a pvp game, but AGS clearly changed its “vision” in that regard.
The masses are waiting for pve content to come back, u can tell by looking at the steam charts.
When Arena’s came out, the PVP crowd was convinced this would bring people back, we had a 3% bump that month in player base.
This summer event which resulted in a 26% increase was because of… Music instruments…
I know people have a hard time accepting this, but PVE content brings back players.
What we need is a few months of adding pve content, just to bring back more people, then slightly start fixing, adding more PVP elements.
Heck if u ask me, they need a separate PVP skill tree.
the true majority of an MMORPG is the PVE community
This is subjective to what game you’re playing. ArchAge for instance, is an almost entirely focused PvP community, despite there being plenty of areas where PvP is disabled. New World strives for both, and has a fairly balanced community that seems split rather evenly.
Combat being PVP based is a serious/critical issue for the game followed by the lack of raids/large raid grouping.
This I entirely agree with. They’re trying to balance stats and effects for both aspects of the game as one singular set. Almost every game that has attempted this has abandoned it at one point or another.
An OPR-like PVPVE would be amazing where two teams race against each other to kill the last boss, similar to WoW’s Alterac Valley except no PVP actually happens.
I think this actually sounds pretty fun. Have it in like teams of 5 or 10, do a boss gauntlet.
Customizable gear-based PVE-only perks system. You custom pick your two preferred perks on each one of your gear pieces
This would entirely invalidate their current structure of crafting. While not a bad idea, it is unlikely to happen based on the sheer volume of work in both implementing it, and rebuilding gear crafting from the ground up. Considering the majority of the player base neither loves nor dislikes the way the gear works, there isn’t a compelling reason to invest what would take a core team the better part of a year to focus on.
Introduce perks that give weapon abilities an additional charge usable in PVE only
I would VERY much like this
Allow equipping a third weapon for PVE only
Honestly they’d have to increase the cooldown on the bulk of the abilities in the game if they were to try this, otherwise, you’d be fighting latency to weapon swap every 4 seconds. Most players can’t feel the impact of latency on weapon swaps currently. (emphasis on most)
Reagrding PVE and how critical it is for it to get its own specific combat systems, simply watching Danneh PvPing in OPR and how crazy fun the fights look compared to how boring and uninteresting Danneh’s Tempest streams look, for example, is enough for others to judge for themselves. Same streamer, same game, same combat, but PVP always looks exciting and PVE always looks boring.
I really think something major needs to change for PVE fights to feel as crazy fun as the same game makes it look like when players are engaged in PVP. And I don’t mean the fight on the NPC side needs changing, the mechanics are fine and the boss fights are usually challenging and engaging, but it is on the player combat side of things that things need to fundamentally change, imho
I recommend the devs login to BDO and try it out in PVE on all classes all the way to max level and unlocking awakening class specs to see how PVE in that game looks and feels as exciting as PVP does in NW. Just for the sake of getting ideas and experiencing things first hand. It shouldnt take more than 3 hours to do that per class if you know the fastest grind spots…etc.
I play mostly arenas when I do pvp, I’m lvl 57 on the PVP track. I can honestly tell u, the matches were its actually fun are like 10%.
Either u get stomped, where u barely survive 1 whole minute, or u have team members calling u a bunch of names because we aren’t winning.
The best matches are the casual ones for me, u can tell when u are fighting somewhat at the same “sweat” level. There’s a whole lot of “dancing”, fights take their sweet time, it is fun.
Alas, u don’t get many of these.
Maybe some sort of ladder system would fix this, but I don’t think it will work, sweaty players will always find a way to stomp.
There’s also the issue of total unbalance that is very noticeable in arena’s. There are moments when u get a spear in the back and good luck trying escape that.
And than we have the premades vs the solo Q.
I watch Danneh’s stream daily, since I work from home, he is a pvp player at heart, so its kinda obvious he gets more joy out of pvp.
Thing is I am a 100% PVEr and I don’t enjoy the combat in expeditions. It is kind of fun in one on one player vs NPC situations in solo PVE activities though but not quite exciting yet…
I’m willing to bet if Arenas was equalized an PvP mode. Many many more would’ve came back for it. 9 times out of 10 vertical PvE to gear to win PvP scenes always fail. Very few are willing to queue into something that they know they’ll just automatically lose. Due to not spending hundreds if not thousands of hours grinding PvE for PvP gear. Most PvPers are just going to skip such system and PvP in games with equalized PvP, or in horizontal progression MMOs.
@Fearless
Absolutely 100% agree and am baffled by why AGS doesn’t see this.
WoW PvP at least GIVES you PvP specific gear fully OUTSIDE of PVE and it still fails to keep interest in PvP as high as games that equalize PvP where gear-related PvP rewards are just cosmetics such as Valorant and Overwatch.
That don’t make no sense, since its relative easy to get gear via the PVP track reward system.?
Also, if any at the start of Arena pvp was more equalized in a sense than it is now.
Point is pve gear is not revarding, you farming like exsample bow for one week, you get your bis bow, and you berely feal any diferent in dmg, so why you was grinding same dangeon ? For bis ? And now you do 2% more dmg?;D
Not really, you are just fodder for more than 30+ matches of OPR. Before you start getting PvP gear to be a factor. In 3v3 Arenas just forget it, you’ll get smoked so hard that you barely get any rewards. And this is all taking into consideration that you did the 150+ hour expertise grind first.
As a PvPer and I know I speak for many of us. We will just skip such baseline headache ridden entry gate to PvP. When we can just turn on GW2, FFXIV, Apex, DoTA2, Smite, LoL, PUBG, CS:GO, and others, and get quality PvP matches right from the gate, or with as little as 30 hours or less. Even the Korean MMO developers are kowtowing to the paradigm shift. Just look at BDO and Lost Ark, both have equalized Ranked PvP modes now. And the equalized PvP modes in those two MMOs have far more activity, than the PvE to gear based baby seal clubbin PvP modes.
If you want proof just go queue for PvP in a MMO or game with standardized or equalized PvP. The demands for such PvP is so high that matches pretty much start in less than 3 minutes even at 2 A.M. local time. Or there are soo much interest, that mass scale PvP matchups on some maps are queued beyond server compacity. Now go queue for PvP in a vertical PvE gear to win PvP game like New World or ArcheAge at 2 A.M. local time. The night and day activity levels is all the proof one needs, to see how well my point prior stands tried and true.
Now it’s just a wait and see game. I personally cannot see myself investing time on NW in its current form other than as a casual doing 40 minute max play sessions a day or every other day.
I feel like it is taking the wrong direction even with the changes coming with Brimstone Sands. Core issues that make or break the game as a PVE mmorpg are still there. The community is mostly PVPers who for some unknown reason to me are willing to spend hundreds of hours farming PVE gear just to PVP with it…In other words, it is stil super niche even for the PVP crowd.
The anouncement of 2023’s roadmap by @Lane will hopefully make clear to everyone where NW is heading in the short term and hopefully it will be aligned to our hopes and wishes for the game.
Not yet shared, I am guessing they are still finalizing it. I predict NW will be back to being in the top 5 on Steam charts within the next 6 to 12 months.
