The year-long live brought up a lot of interesting stuff about the future of the game and really brought an exciting mood.
But one of the lines during the greatsword discussion worried me.
One of the developers when referring to the skill Roaring Rupture said
“Roaring rupture which will taunt and EMPOWER players on nearby …” (1:09:10 - 1:09:20)
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the skill buff is not empower, it’s fortify. Also, unless it’s a grotesque mistake in the skill description, it seems that the effect only applies to the skill user and not their allies.
In fact, the whole comment talking about how good it would be to use GS and S&S as a tank, just makes it clear why tanks are in the position they are today, totally expendable.
He’s right about what the tank’s role would be, I really agree with his speech, but that’s not what we see in the game, unfortunately.
Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the live and I’m excited for the greatsword to arrive, but this particular line worried me. Because, in addition to describing the skill wrong, it basically ignores that the “guard point” mechanic is basically a debuff in medium and large scale pvp.
In the last Devblog we heard that they would have a lot of interesting changes to improve heavy armor and blocking it, but none of that is present in ptr.
I have been advocating that tanking based positions get more “dps” like feels to it so that tanks are more common place. No one said tanks have to use sword and board. Its an iconic concept, but its not mandatory. Many classes in many games use two handed weapons or dpsish tank concepts.Them shifting this change could of been for many reasons. Trust he knows what he is talking about, ptr comes with the disclaimer “things are subject to change”.
The content consumed by the smallest percentage of players in any content of the game? I’m pretty sure “Balance for wars” should be the last PvP balance pass.
It’s pretty common to misspeak when on the spot. What’s the freaking point of this post? What is your goal? Why spend so much time to point this out? Jeez dude…
Incidentally, it is precisely in medium and large scale pvp that weapons must be balanced. This is an MMO, the game is based on a group of players acting together.
Wanting to balance weapons for small scale pvp or 1v1 is the quickest way to unbalance.
I personally just wish the “DPS” function is more with proper CCing. If stuns were stuns and dedicated to the tank role (or have a system that punishes CC Spam properly therefore people can finally forgo CC spells and leave it to the tank/ice mage in group content), then that would help their “DPS” as well as their threat potential.
The purpose of the post is clear. I want to congratulate you for the new features presented, as well as highlighting problems in the discussion about GS and remembering imbalances present in the game.
These imbalances, which were mentioned by the devs themselves.
If the tank archetype can do as much damage as a dedicated DPS than DPS because an obsolete role. Because competitive minded players will just play tank and curbstomp DPSes.
I personally believe New World needs to give each role and archetype a thing they do awesome at, and a big weakness for other roles and archetypes to leverage.
This whole thing, that tanks should be able to almost as much damage as dedicated damage dealers. Just makes tanks highly overtuned and unapproachable.
