Opinion: The attunement perk is overrated

Change my mind.

What perks would you prefers over it? On bow, for single target dmg, it’s bis. No doubt.

Youre right…

Its really incredible the playerbase can look at single target chain proc and think its the holy grail of dps.

Try talking to a bruiser about it. That playerbase thinks its a pure +18% damage on everything and slots it over RM without thinking.

It’s definitely part of the new BiS meta, especially for ranged. Still need to test it with melee, but on a single target it’s better than TS.

I think the +19% weapon damage goes over a lot of people’s heads. It equates to about 200 damage in most cases.

It’s definitely part of BIS for many weapons for sure, but you can argue how impactful it is or really any perk is in the grand scheme of things. 20% of a 5k hit could be an extra 1000 damage. That in conjunction with all of the other perks out there it can be a really powerful weapon. How that compares to some alternatives can be much less significant but people really want BIS and it’s definitely part of that for many weapons. Not all of course.

It’s not 20% of a 5k hit, it’s 20% weapon damage extra.

At 625 on a training dummy initial light attack was getting me - 285 extra damage with 310 STR on a great axe. Going through the full 3 swing light attack chain, an Attunement axe was doing a little over 6% more damage than Thwarting Strikes.

I still need to test it in some OPR to see how the damage changes in actual combat with resistance and other things factored in. But considering attack speed of GA, I would not be surprised if overall damage was generally higher. But I also wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t.

Yeah 20% of the weapon damage! Maybe I exaggerated the weapon damage a bit haha.

The elemental damage from Attunement gets bumped up with empower and I’m pretty sure with crit multiplier, so it can go higher. Also less likely to be mitigated by gems if you’re a bruiser. Or if you run Arboreal.

Sort of; like with any other ability that’s based of %weapondamage it will only be affected by the crit multiplier if the initial hit was a Crit, this goes for other status effects too.

Also some people aren’t looking at the whole picture. It might only do “200” damage, but if say enchanted only gives you an extra 120 to your hit then obviously 200>120. It’s about the total not just the small number you see.

And yes it’s effected by BaseDamage and Empower.

Thwarting strikes has no cooldown, you’d get more damage out of attacking clumps with thwarting strikes.

it doesn’t work that way. It’s 18% of the weapon damage (press K look the value on the right)
For example on my 1860 dmg musket is 334 + bonuses

Ok but hear me out. Attunement doesnt scale with the number of targets while RM does. So an axe clipping a second target (very frequent occurrence) is doubling the value of the perk.

Say RM can reliably get you like 20% cdr (7 hits per cooldown). Arent you doing more damage or at least value than what is basically a single target skewer dot ticking?

So your assumptions here are a big part of WHY it is considered bis. It doesnt do what you wrote and is not only weaker but single target. In no way is it a 20% damage boost - it is more of a single target chain that procs on abilities.

For bruisers the meta is basically whatever a few elite bruisers tell other people to run. If you dont run it you dont get slotted or need to explain yourself. Those guys say attunement but i dont see how weapon perk + thwarting + refreshing move could be worse for anything other than your pure damage numbers in a war where you hold your abilities anyway so you dont need RM.

Does having maelstrom perk on your armor overwrite the weaken applied from another persons axe? Because if so you kind of need that on your axe in war otherwise youre effectively boosting the other teams damage.

I also hear people say its playstyle but i havent heard a good explanation of why attunement fills that playstyle yet. My guess is attunement just isnt goid but people spend the money so theyre going to cope hard.

Also, ice attunement is just better than all other attunements if its affected by ultimate chill. You cant slot enough frost gems to mitigate 25% extra damage while remaining war viable. In fact that would probably boost your damage against that target by more than any attunement.

It’s definitely a PvP-centric perk. especially for 3v3 or any weapon that specializes in single target damage, like bow or musket.

The attunement will tend to be more damage vs most gem setups. It’s realistically less overall damage in AoE situations, however, in 3v3 you want to maximize your burst potential to minimize the chance the target can escape or gets heals.

Way back when attunement came out and people overlooked it I bought up an entire array of weapons with it including this little gem for 7500g.
