Alpha and Preview early combat was slow and boring.
I hope they never change it back to that.

stopped playing a month ago. just waiting for good stagger mechanics. with good combat i can endure all the grinding shit they invented. without i have no incentive to actually learn something meaningful
Went out of my way to +1 this thread. I am not traditionally an mmo player but this game attracted me as being potentially the first skill based mmo with their proposed mechanics. I watched endless streams to learn builds, gear spots, levelling and really invested to give it a full go. Coming from games like Mordhau, Chivalry, Mount and Blade, and Dark souls I have played every melee-esque game under the sun. What was demonstrated in preview is not what exists now. Before expressing my opinion here I levelled all weapons, geared them decently and tried them all in countless PvP duels. I’m not used to grinding in games but had committed to the end game to see what the potential was. Quite simply what exists now is horrendous. The ceiling would appear to be around timed ability usage, dodging, and some positioning but essentially comes down to a DPS race based largely on gear and build. Who cares if I dodge each root, stun, charge, and hit them after if I get no reward for doing so. It doesn’t feel deliberate or tactical. I simply cannot deal damage without taking it unless playing around an ability or at range. What an absurd concept. Anyways i’ll spare any more wall of text. Once again +1 to the major combat changes proposed by Halcyon as a step in the right direction. Otherwise, I think many will chalk this up as just another mmo taking little risks to do something new.
I actually had never looked into the old combat system until seeing this today and this thread makes me sad. I am generally not a melee player but if the old system was in place I would definitely pick up a sword. There is so much depth to the old system and decision making was important. They had an amazing system on their hands but ruined it due to an outspoken group of players that were not very skilled at the game. It’s a shame how the lowest common denominator is always catered to.

So true lol.
Recently, ESO did something crazy, completely flipped the game’s script upside down risking all the “conventional” MMO gear - gear is now hybrid, no longer is it only for magicka users, stam users, etc. The sets just give bonuses and has a proc. It made ESO much more spicy ! now mage users can wear medium gear, stam users can mess around with what used to be only for mages, etc. This update made theory crafting much more fun, viable, and diverse. It made PvP more interesting aswell.
Cough, New World, cough, claimed early on they wanted players to theory craft with their build but we see today how that fell completely flat.
MMOs should take more risks, we’re tired of the same formula. Taking risks = higher payoff, New World almost had it.
Yes what happened? Patch 1.1.0 made combat worse. Bow, firestaff and ice gauntlet got longer animation locks. Why? Gameplay feels sluggish after that patch
I am fully convinced that this game is lost beyond repair. They not only totally screw what they wanted this game to be, but also they got no balls to even talk about it. That’s why online dropped hard, not because mounts weren’t added to game or other shit. If you’re devoted, you are persistent. How you can be devoted here? to what exactly may I ask?
I am looking forward other things, but I will gladly jump to NW when someone will just make a private server on old rules. Sooner or later it will happen
Yeap, and with the December patches making the game grindier tells me Devs aren’t really listening to the player base. I’ll be there with you whenever NW private server opens
I don’t think they ever listened.
They also took very toxic plan to develop the game. Grind is not what games are about. Just look at WoW history, you had to grind, to grind items, to be able to grind better items and repeat till you are bored or content ended and then you had to wait for game devs to add more grind to the game. If there are no things that keep you in the game that are NOT grind, sooner or later either devs will run out of ideas for grind content, or people will get bored.
I really can’t understand why people don’t take whats good from the history, and make it better. Old World is just a - let’s take bad things, and make them worse - Kinda attitude.
ohh yeah, the mind numbing grind gameplay and the time gate. I’ve played TONS of MMOs like that, I hate it so much. Archeage and Black Desert is grindy, same with Blessed Unleashed. Grind and timegate is literally the recipe to a boring, dry, stale, MMORPG that I find mostly in Asian copy pasta MMORPGS. They lure you in with beautiful graphics, sound track, but the gameplay itself is shallow like a puddle.
It’s funny because BDO and Archeage lost majority of their players from one patch where it made their gear they grinded hours for obsolete - if NW goes through and releases the update, its pretty much a goner. I would not be surprised if AGS releases cash shop items to help boost your grind like Korean p2w MMOs do. NW is pretty much heading in that generic failing MMORPG path
It failed when they resigned of only unique thing they had - combat.
I am totally back to old games. I just feel sad that I waited so long feed by vision of something cool
Interestingly, the next patch will reduce the G.Axe lunge and people are already claiming melee combat will be bad as a result (an overreaction, with hints of truth). It’s funny to me for a couple reasons:
The G.Axe lunge was absurd and should have never been put in, but we all know it was put in because melee struggles to keep on ranged targets in the current combat system. Why do they inherently struggle? Well we’ve known the answer to that for the last 12 months; The removal of hit-stun from normal melee attacks.
I wonder what the next band-aids will look like? More slows on all melee attacks perhaps? Nerfs to dodge?
Yea, good point. It’s sad that from nearly ready to release game, we went into “let’s go live and broke everything trying to reinvent the wheel again, during live, on players as test subjects”
My brain can’t even get the idea of looking on, what is bad in games and doing exactly the same. It’s far beyond any repair anyway.
Even if they would totally reverse the game(and when it will die even more, they probably would?) I just got a feeling no one would like to come back due to how they treated people, and how they still do treat people.

yeah, I’m also aware of AGS’s other flopped game (where they actually wiped from existence due to poor feedback) Crucible, and other mobile games. I figured I’d give AGS another chance with this game as all game companies flop with their first several releases. I was looking forward to NW after reading about alpha reviews on how good the combat was for a survival game, it wasn’t meant to be MMO/MMORPG (as we can see with the 2k pop. cap per server).
But after all these changes, unwanted changes, and decisions made on greed rather than making riskier decisions in innovating something new - I def won’t be coming back if they were ever to relaunch NW.
Besides, as NW was released there’s other big sharks and better games about to be released lol. I’m looking forward to Elden Ring, I thought NW would be what Elden Ring is.
Combat is one thing, they absolutely didn’t stick to any shaping of the game and community. If you look at the forums you got posts like - “Told you people will quit if mounts won’t be added” 0r “if you won’t remove luck bonus to flagged I’ll stop playing, I don’t want other people to get things that I can’t because I don’t want to do that activity”
Game and community is far beyond repair. Lately even Facebook drops me ads of streamers showing their disappointment with the game.
2022 looks brighter with upcoming games than 2021 was. In general, 2021 was a failure.
As this thread has always been, excellent. Bump.
Great post
I don’t know if it is even worth posting anymore, but I saw THIS POST about stunlock.
It seems that AGS’s approach to fully eliminate stagger to get rid of any stunlock debate backfired in the same moment they kept stun-abilities in the game especially on WH and GA. By not resolving the issue by smart design (e.g. diminishing return) they not only crippled their own combat system but also denied themselves any way of implementing fair cc abilities.
They have definitely failed spectacularly in their claimed goal. There’s just so many issues that are inherently bad design. People like to blame bugs and exploits for the population diminishing but lousy design choices play a large role as well.
I’m not even mad that they tried the designs, because sometimes you just need to guess and check. Problem is they guessed wrong, ignored feedback, and doubled down on bad decisions. Not just hit-stun/stagger, but all sorts of decisions in the game.
I just can’t fathom it.
But hey, here’s a giant turkey.
I wish i had the chance to play back then and from what op described, hit/stagger system defienetly was better and very sould of the game. they removed a feature that gave meaning to all aspect of game.
I bump this, 400th reply in hopes of getting this back and have a chance of experincing how it felt back then.
