Oh, so you managed a game that had over 200 worlds with 2k players each? So why don’t you go to Amazon and let them know what they’re doing wrong.
Your comment is just offensive to the company for no reason. You have no idea what broke, but you jump to assumption that it is somehow “bad code” or they didn’t test patching process. Really? Do you honestly think this is that simple? They should hire you! /s
Bad things can happen when deploying to multiple boxes all over the world, have some patience people.
Sincerely, person that is planning a scheduled deployment to production of a big service tomorrow.
This is FAR from the first time they are doing maintenance. They have had preview, alpha, closed beta, and 2 open beta waves to get the SRE down on this.
I’m personally impressed with the amount of server & game development experts we have playing this game and posting on this forum.
Still one of the smoothest launches I’ve been involved with.
Why do you think that a “short” patch notes is a sign of few changes or easy updates?
Stop being a crying baby, better 7h of maintenance that having a week of bugs because lack of tests in updates
Sadly it’s the first time they are doing it directly after adding 200-400% more servers. I think that’s the issue here.
Everyone online is an expert. Didn’t you know?
They don’t see they have also added a large number of new worlds and this wasn’t in the patchnotes.
Will they extend all of our sell orders by 7 hours at the trading posts???
hope someone remembered to click +Add" button before you click Save before restarting
Exactly the change management process must be non-existent. Everything I do goes through Dev>test>prod scenario by the time I get to test I have to fill out a Change Ticket and then have my Change examined by the change management team I have to be on the call answering all their questions. First and foremost is the duration of your change ie how long without service and second if this goes to pot what’s your backout procedure. I have seen some tricky stuff before and had to roll back several patches but I know this rarely when you go down the I need another hour route does it bode well for the patch.
We are facing this issue since alpha so its fine we used to it ( Spit )
They had 600 production servers in beta and alpha?
It is the first time. ALL online games have downtimes, maintenance, and unforeseen issues at times. Relax, have some empathy, and remember that there are human beings making this game.
Looks like you don’t know how software development works
I hope you won’t be in future alphas if you complain about maintenance and downtime during an ALPHA.
My personal theory is that part of the fixes related to how the data stores are managed and/or how player states interact with the data stack.
High concurrency count with performance optimization is freaking HARD. Seriously. Net code and doors are the two banes of game development.
On doors… have you noticed there arent any? There’s a reason that the only occlusion in the game is a “portal” that you e to interact with. Doors are really tough to code because there are a lot of positional interactions possible, and in a multi-user world, you have to deal with blocking etc.
I know i know, you probably still think it is the Size that matters, but it is not kiddo, it is not.
Well said.
throwing money at problems only leads to being broke.
with all that time used here on complaining you could have written a new patch already by yourselfs
You lack the knowledge to understand that the size of a patch notes isn’t proportional to the time it needs for a game for an update, maintenance and optimization.
