PC overheating and shuts down/goes sleep mode

hi, yall.

I have seen similar threads but couldn’t find one with exactly my issue.

Whenever I play NW my pc gets extremely warm, which I understand is normal if you are playing on a laptop.

However, this time the computer has shut down twice due to what I suspect is overheating - I am guessing this is a CPU issue? Does any1 else have a similar problem? My computer should run the game fine.

My specs are as follows:

MSI GF65 Thin 15,6" FHD 144 Hz gaminglaptop

CPU Intel Core i7 (10. generasjon) 10750H / 2.6 GHz
Max Turbo-hastighet 5 GHz
Antall kjerner 6 kjerner
64-bits databehandling Ja
Chipset Intel HM470
RAM 16 GB (2 x 8 GB)
Maks støttet RAM 64 GB
Teknologi DDR4 SDRAM
Hastighet 3200 MHz
Produktformfaktor SO DIMM 260-pin

(Text is norwegian but hope it is understandable.)

Does any1 have any tips on how to combat this issue? I was playing on uncapped FPS, and have since set it to 60 and lowered graphics to medium, which in my mind should not even be necessary.

Please let me know if there is any other info u need as well and I will be sure to post it to you guys.

Any help is muchly appreciated.

Cheers

Are you actually monitoring your temperatures? I had the same issue in the betas w/ CPU 40°c, GPU 60°c. There is a GPU core voltage issue I suspect that is causing it. If you lower Power Target to ~70% I bet you can play for hours.

@Yakkuru

Thanks for your reply.

I just started monitoring now.

Below are temps while in queue in windowed mode:

Sorry for possibly asking stupid, but how do I lower my power target?

Thanks as always.

Also temp with GPU:

80 is pretty high have you tried lowering the settings in game? Turning off bloom, shadows, and water reflections usually help as they take a lot of compute power. Your GPU is probably throttling itself so it doesn’t overheat.

Thanks for your reply.

I did put graphics to medium, changed to windowed mode, max fps at 60 and turned on vertical sync. Should it be necessary to decrease graphics even more? Only this game I have had these issues, maybe more ppl have similar issue? Specs should be fine.

Yeah I mean 80C is kinda concerning for medium graphics. It could be that it isn’t optimized yet so might need to wait for a newer driver update if you’ve already did that. I try to keep mine below 70 for desktop I’m not sure if 80 is completely normal for laptop as I don’t game on those. Capping FPS even lower might help more too but like I said try turning off water reflections and mirroring graphics and see if you’re still powering down.

@LysemGrooly

Thanks again. Yeah - I dont like that it shuts down.

However, once I created a character and went to cutscene GPU temp went down to 62 degrees. Maybe the menu/launcher requires more than actual gameplay? will be interesting to see once I actually get into game to try again. I am in queue like most others at the moment.

So, once queue times go down I am sure it will be much easier to test out fixes as well.

Yeah I’ve noticed that too, the intro screen has a ton of flora being rendered so reducing view distance too and flora rendering is another route you can take to mess with.

The game is definitely not optimized well, laptop GPU hitting 80 is normal if used for extended time… a bit too high for my liking, but it’s still within acceptable “operating range”.
But your CPU is definitely throttling, its hitting 100c (I’m assuming the max readings are when are in game, and the current readings are when you alt-tabbed to take the screenshots; CPU temp drops quickly when alt-tabbing out of the game).
Your laptop is still new, since it got a 3060, so its very unlikely that you will need to replace thermal pads and thermal paste. (only really needed for 3yrs+ old laptops).

I noticed the game occasionally consumes more power than what the hardware is designed to.
Notice your GPU power hitting 93w? According to MSI website and laptop specs, your GPU is rated for 75W of maximum power. No mention on the CPU, but knowing 10th gen laptop, it should be around 45W.
If this is true, then it just further confirms my claim that I’ve posted about.

@el3ashri

Thanks alot for checking and following up.

So what you are saying is that this is more than likely an issue on their end, and not on mine? I have barely used this computer and not had any issues while playing league, so I doubt there are any hardware damages to my “rig”.

Can we hope for an updated driver/better optimization from their side? Or will it simply be hard for me to play New World on this computer?

Cheers

Your GPU Core Voltage is the one to really be concerned with. Both your CPU / GPU temps are pretty high, though.

You miiight need to run HWInfo64 or the latest version to get your voltages. I don’t see them in the list.

@yakkuru

Now that I started playing GPU temp does not go above 61 degrees, whereas CPU is maxed at 90 degrees but usually is at about 70–75 degrees. So for me it seems it was a huge difference in the login menu and actually playing.

Also, I might add, after reading some tips, I changed to windowed mode and set grahpics to medium/low, which also might contribute to this. Should not be necessary with this computer, but seems to be necessary to be able to play. A little frustrating.

Until things are sorted I would do everything in low for starters, especially shadows. I can do 3840 x 1600 on high settings 120fps, but still doing everything low just to be safe.

Your cooling in a laptop is probably limiting you.

Lol mine consistently hits 90 degrees or higher and has shut down 5 times. I order more fans and a cooling pad hope that helps.
