Agree that’s one of my biggest complaints lack of information especially in tool tips
Well, if it’s like that, them it seems like a bug to me.
I got to level 80-ish logging in open beta just seeing how long it would take to find one. Tried all different types of trees I could chop, prioritizing trees that looked like they were petrified/in a petrified area. Ended up with 0. I did submit feedback that they should probably bump the drop rate a little bit since something that rare isn’t worth spending on a level 10 or so craft lol.
Also i forgot to mention it does go by your crafting skill as well I did not see that stuff dropping until after lvl 100 mining and then I got several of them to drop and I don’t really think it is what was said up above that it’s only certain nodes. It may have been that way in the betas but it appears they have fixed that because previously in closed and open beta I was only getting peppercorn from one plant in one spot but now I am getting it in different spots it seems to be more random so I would assume even though peppercorns are white common items that the rare items are functioning on the same mechanics other than the green rare item is just simply more rare.
I do agree that the drop rate needs to be bumped up slightly but keep in mind if your trying to get it to drop without using all of the +luck item mechanics of course your not going to get it to drop and if you do it will be super super rare then. If they increase the drop rate for unbuffed items it makes those items of no use. This is just my experience from closed and open beta.
Similar for me. Over 1000hrs in Alpha testing and got about 8 petrified wood in total, with lots of luck improvements going on (gear, food, etc.). Other players said they had no problem having it drop. So no idea really what is going in the code behind the scenes for drop rates of items like this. Fae iron was so common for me though that I didn’t know what to do with it!
Maybe the guy above is right and only certain nodes drop it, but I’m doubtful, although maybe possible.
Yea I’m not totally sure if it’s that way or not but it does warrant being looked at for sure. The first time I got some fae iron I was still low enough lvl to benefit from the fae iron and I got 4 pieces and I did not have any +luck gear but I never saw another piece until I got the luck gear. So I made me the bow out of it and I did not use the bow very long and it was replaced so yea kinda not worth trying to get it yourself and just buy it if it’s for sale.
So im not the only one who says this lol
It’s also not just petrified wood! It’s the same with fay iron as well!
They have the rarity far too high for the level!
The tier two green mat like this wood and Fae Iron drop like they are legendary mats, not uncommon ones. All the second tier green crafting recipes need them, but you can’t get them. I would say the drop rate need to be bumped 5 to 10 times, but then again 5 to 10 times zero is still zero. The base drop chance should be somewhere in the 5% range from all sources, but it is no where near that.
I used the mining potatoes to boost my luck, but I did not use luck gear, and got nothing. I will try to make some luck gear and try again. I am currently sitting at just over 100 mining and I have seen no fae iron.
My logging is much lower at around 70, but even then with the luck food I have seen nothing.
I agree with your assessment. The drop rate is too low for something that is eventually replaced.
Just creep behind a tree and shout, “I’m gonna chop you down with my axe” voila, petrified wood.
Reroll your logging axe to get +Luck, it will help.
Likely replaced before you find enough to craft something out of it.
Well I can confirm that what I said previously is correct. I am lvl 41 now and I have a full set of +luck logging gear and mining gear with the 1400 harvesting food and the 1400 mining food I now have about 14 pieces of fae iron and only 1 piece of petrified wood and interestingly I now have 2 Whisperwood which is the blue rare. My logging and mining are over 100. I did get my pretrified wood from a dead log on the south side of Everfall in that field. It kind of seems that certain nodes of iron only drop gems or rare thing but I truly don’t believe this to be so because it appears to be pretty random I have gotten gems and such from different nodes that didn’t give me one before and I know for sure now that like say herbs they fixed the issue with peppercorn now I get alot of it. The thing is those things only seem to drop in certain areas like for instance NE of First light you will find cinnamon and nutmeg and dill but you will have to goto other areas to find other stuff.
I also can confirm that the +luck gear for rare items from monsters and chests does work because I farmed a purple item from a certain ghost and I was there for hours and got the purple rapier instead but what I wanted was the purple earrings and once I put on my +luck gear I got the earrings after a couple of respawns of the ghost. I had all armor including a shield and sword with +luck on them.
Good luck all and yes we can still say to us that the petrified wood and fae iron is nigh impossible to get without your skill being high enough and you have to have the +luck items. I’m not saying this is bad only because think of it this way I don’t want stuff handed to me on a silver platter i want to have to work to get those rare things now that being said you can still get those things by using the market and buying the parts you need this helps everyone so maybe we should rethink our disdain for those items being out of reach at that level because technically they really aren’t the only time you see this an issue is on a new server because an older server with established people you should be able to find this stuff on a new char by buying it. Personally I want to go with the dev’s vision here and I think it’s ok but they should increase the petrified wood drop % and possibly the fae iron as well.
Only started getting them after logging 150, then they started dropping fairly frequently from young and mature trees. No idea if that’s proposital or not, but it needs some patching since by the point you’re reaching logging 150 you probably have no uses for petrified wood anymore, since they’re used in “low level” crafting recipes.
in order to get rare items from resources, you need some things that increase your base luck related to it.
For logging this is
logging level
3 logging trophies in 3 houses(3 qualities)
logging luck food.
then you need things to improve that base chance, which is gear with drop rate bonuses.
I found a theory that:
each level (in that type of gathering) provides 10, for 2000 at level 200
food provides 1400-1700
trophies provide 500/1000/1500 per
if you dont have at lleast like 1000 you have an extremely low chance for the first teir of rares.
short version, a low level charachter wont get many rares without food or trophies.
i recently saw 1-2 drop at level 150+, but i dont usually run gear, and i only have one minor trophy currently, i rarely run food.
Getting some of the gears and boosters for some of these boosters is my next goal
something like 40k wood… i’ve gotten 1. you can get them anytime after 50, just slightly more likely higher levels, food, trophies etc like mentioned. i was around 75 when i got my one useless stick.
A lot of misinformation about this in this post. It does indeed drop, but the drop chances are very very slim. I just leveled my logging from like 50-90 this morning and I’ve gotten a grand total of 1 of those
and I do have full luck gear one, approximately 32% from gear + amulet and 7% on axe + 1400 luck food and 1 trophy.
This site clarifies a LOT of shit about luck and drops in the game. Thank me (and Tanek17) later

Edit: your logging skill does indeed affect this quite much
the higher it is, the higher are the chances to get rare mats. There’s also a threshold system that you can’t even get some of the uncommon/rare mats if you’re below certain skill. Although that can be partly circumvented with + luck gear
Have loads, get to level 200 and have some luck gear.
It was weird not getting a single fae iron from tons of veins I mined then I killed a random ice wolf and mined it for 10 fae iron? Those “green/rare” resource feel more like a catch-up resource for high lvl players to gather quickly from mob mining to powerlvl the skills they ignored then something you should get naturally while leveling.
Not sure about wood, but i have gotten only 2 iron fae by the time i got 32,000 items mined achievement but when i got to lvl 60 and wore a full mining set and T5 tool… i have gotten 27 iron faes from 4k iron.
