Picking up a different weapon

Heyho all

I’ve been running as a medium armour, Spear/Musket dexterity build since pretty much level 10. I frequently play with a mate and the spear gives us a really nice range of PvE CC and the musket a nice amount of ranged damage (he runs Hatchet/Great Axe) - this seems to work pretty well and allow us to tackle things that might be a bit more challenging otherwise.

Recently my mate flicked from Bow to Great Axe and I’ve realised that I fancy playing around with something a bit different and struggling to work out what. I don’t really want to be constantly changing gear and attributes if I can avoid it, which makes Rapier the natural contender - but the little bit I played with, I’m not sure I enjoyed. I’ve played healer / tank in other games, but not sure how well they’d necessarily work alongside what I’m currently running? Thoughts?

You can stay dex build and Tank. I do and I think its better than before when i was Str/Con

I go for 50 Str/200 Dex/200 Con for PvE Full Heavy VB atm. Tower Shield

100 Str/250 Dex/100 Con Full Med VB for PvP. Round Shield

Mainly S/S Spear build but carry a Musket on side.

I know VB isnt the best but its fine for me. I hate the gear grind of running Myrk etc

Since you are Level 10, this decision is somewhat difficult for most players since most of the time players just roll with what they pick up during the time. To me, it seems you like melee based on the weapon choices and supporting your friends with alittle bit of range DPS support from the Musket.

The other decision is also based on falling into the “meta” trap. Well, sometimes you can’t avoid meta since meta is pretty good in most situations based on damage and survival output. This can lead to a few choices. Also at level 10, you’re really not thinking too much about open world PvP or what no, mainly focused on leveling up as efficiently as you can which brings me to my next point.

Main quests, town board and faction quests are a sure must if you want to level up rather quickly. When you return to town with a quest to turn in, check the town board and faction missions for easy grabs while you are out and about conducting your main quests, this way, you’ll get more XP from all 3 sources at the same settlement and make sure you leave town with a town board and faction missions as well. Reason mainly for Faction missions, is to build up Faction Tokens and Reputation to obtain good gear/weapons for your character which are very good through 520 gear score.

Consider range DPS with your musket which includes bow, which both are very good together. Or, consider a mage build. I’m sure you’ve heard “mages are bad, don’t do it, they are trash blah blah blah…”, but at low levels, it’s not that big of a deal, even myself being Level 60 with a Firestaff and Ice Gauntlet are very good together. Even though the Firestaff received nerf’s it’s still a very good range weapon especially the Pillar of Fire (PoF) damage from 135% to 170% increase. Minor traits to the FS took a slight nerf, but with full INT points and INT gear, Firestaff and Ice Gauntlet are still a very nice combo. Another alternative would be Ice Gauntlet / Void Gauntlet. With this pair, you can use Oblivion > Petrifying Scream > Ice Storm, VERY deadly combo imo and I love it, it shreds mobs. You can keep Medium build of you like, however you can also be in Light Gear (for PvE you still have survivability, for PvP, light armor is not recommended)

For gems for each I would recommend:

Firestaff: Opal (you do more dmg while your stamina is not full, hence Light build for dodge roll)
Ice Gauntlet: Malachite (CC = slow, stun, root) (Ice Storm CC)
Void Gauntlet: Malachite (CC = slow, stun, root) (Petrifying Scream CC)

For Light Gear you can wear a Medium chest (which provides more PHYS/ELE resistance than a light chest) and still be able to dodge roll. So your gear would look like:

Head: Light
Chest: Medium
Hands: Light
Legs: Light
Foot: Light

Good luck in your decisions! :+1:

Cheers - I’ll have a tinker with those!

Thanks for the really comprehensive reply, though both me and my mate are 60 - it was just that I’ve been playing with Spear & Musket since level 10.

Funnily enough, I had a VG randomly drop yesterday and that’s sort of one of the things that got me thinking. My worry was that with my current dex build the magical based weapons could well be a little lack lustre, and ideally I don’t want to change both weapons at once (it was quite amusing seeing my mate struggle to kick out enough damage with level 1 in his great axe)

Spear + snb was it for me as alternative to musket; round shield so you stay medium armor. What you get is high mobility, a lot of cc and some good defensive capabilities. You can basically 1v1 anything. If a good ranged player doesn‘t want to fight, they may get away sometimes, but thats okay imo…
