Remember, they said the roadmap are just some of the items they are working on, not all of them. Perhaps they are concerned that the mention of the hippos would create too much pressure and demand from the community?

In the latest Youtube vid, they talk about how they have different teams working on different types of content. They also mentioned they added more people for 2023. Could it be Team Hippo?

That is what I am thinking, perhaps the reason we are not getting a PVP mode is because they have dedicated so many resources to this, which I find COMPLETELY AND UNAPOLOGETICALLY JUSTIFIABLE. I tend to think of the greater good though.

I would like to see the Hippo appear 4 times the size of the Yeti and Turkulon and it actually destroys anything it walks over, thus altering the game map

Or how about Hippo Faction?
Activities you perform in New World will either give you positive or negative standing with Hippos. The more negative your standing with the Hippo faction the more lethal they become. While I won’t go so far as perma death or one shot kills - perhaps temporary loss of your name which is replaced by a Hippo influenced name to let all on your server know that you have not followed proper Hippo protocol.

Now that the Winter Warrior zerg has slowed down some, I got a chance to have a conversation with WW to find out why Forever Winter was the goal. Wouldn’t you know it, the rationale behind forever winter is that if there are no hippos, then it may as well be winter always.
Even the Winter Warrior wants hippos. And you can clearly see how the actions of some, like the Winter Warrior, can put all of Aeternum in peril.
