Population spread - why?

When the max number of players per server is 2,5k and you don’t have cross matchmaking in place your active end game players pool is extremely small.

When I last played all you had were elite runs/OPR/ genesis/Lazarus/arenas.
Now you have 4 more expeditions and pvp arenas.

You also add invasions/wars.

Considering most servers average at ~1k you are spreading the population too thin which gives the feeling that there are no players.

Essentially what I am trying to say is: 2,5k is extremely low for an MMO of this size BUT you agravate the situation with game design.

You should have long term solutions being worked on already (cross server matchmaking) but I really believe you should give max priority to some immediate actions, I will give some example:

  1. Changing the matchmaking asap so you can browse all the groups instead of looking in each dungeon;
  2. Make your events leaner, killing 5 turkeys takes up 1 hour of each player per day. That’s 1 hour they aren’t doing other content ( I understand this is subjective);
  3. Add an extra reward to the base expedition that has mutated active to funnel players to those expeditions .

I appreciate other opinions, even if you disagree :). Chime in.

As a new player on the fresh servers I get the feeling the game is dead. Doing dungeons takes forever because getting a full lobby gets harder every passing day. All activities overall are getting harder due to lack of players, outpost rush arenas dungeons everything is slowly dimming out and getting impossible to participate unless you are willing to wait up to an hour.

Yea, they need to constantly merge servers, so populations always stay above 1000.

The game definitely feels more lively with 2k people per server, though.

Cross-server queues should help a lot.

Cross-server trading posts might be good, too. I guess you’d have to exclude resources because those could be farmed on “dead” servers, but maybe it wouldn’t matter.

I would love cross server trading post. i think fresh start would have to be separate from legacy but otherwise i don’t think there would need to be any other restrictions.

2.5k players is very small for an MMO. Other MMOs would consider a 2.5k player pop to be a “dead” server if it weren’t for cross realm play. I’d rather have a server with a queue then have a server with 800 people at peak time, but that’s just me.

A lot of people like low pop servers, and a good number of people want hyper active servers. But yes, the amount of activities spreads it thin. As the world map gets bigger and more activities are added they should consider raising the server caps too.

I didn’t mention trading post but I agree.
Enabling cross systems should also affect the economy. But that is the long term solution.

The aim of my post is to tell the devs that they need to so small changes now. Not later.

Changing the way LFG is ( making it compact and easier to browse) seems like a small step that could have a huge influence.

I imagine people would be like “I want to run genesis. But look, there is a party just missing a DPS for barnacles”.

They are working on Cross Server Tech. Initially for OPR but once the ground works is done they can push the principle out to other things dung etc etc, hopefully megaserver infrastructure reminiscant of GW2. But to be clear they haven’t said they will roll tech out to anything other than OPR officially as far as I know.

But it would be dumb not to. :slight_smile:

Its funny how all instanced content is basically “dead” and it takes forever to make a group, and on the other side all open world content is very active and people love doing it.

That’s why I would love to see more open world activities, random events, very tough world bosses and more. And don’t get me wrong, I’m type of guy who is interested in instanced content like dungeons (I love running dungeons all day all night in World of Warcraft), but not here, because time that I have to spend making dungeon group is just too long.

I see. I agree with open world bosses, but not like turkulon where you need to kill 5 each day. Making it a fixed spawn or a spawn every 4 hours would be ok.
But I think we reached a point where people are stretched so thin that no activity is healthy.
OPRs don’t start. Some wars have people below lvl 60. Dungeons have half groupsin the waiting room.
As is, some kinda of funneling is needed to avoid this “empty, dead game feeling”

Make wars game mod, remove teritory control, make 1 big mega server with instance system, but game is alive

Sadly I don’t think raising the cap is a possibility , and also the reality is that most servers aren’t at max capacity .
