Possible fix for high temperature on gaming laptop/PC?

Hi All,

Just wanted to post something I discovered in relation to playing on a I7 12th Gen 3070 laptop, that may be of help.

On first run CPU temps were very high and MSI Afterburner showed constant very high frequencies (above 4.0 GHz) and temps above 90C. Gameplay framerate fluctuated around 80 to 100 fps and the laptop did get very hot.

After adjusting some settings I found that uncapping the frame rate in game but using NVIDIA control panel to limit framerate to 60 fps resulted in CPU usage dropping to around 2 GHz and CPU temps averaging around 70C. Now I get a constant 60 fps in either high or very high video setting pre-sets and the laptop runs much much cooler.

You can also try setting max CPU state to 99% or 98% in power settings.

This keeps intel processors from going into “turbo mode” aka “start melting the power adapter mode.”

I set my max CPU state to 90 percent but will try the nvidea framerate cap and see if that helps Ty.

This game really makes CPU’s work hard I think.

I built my computer inside of a freezer. The game seems to be running ok now.

dont game on a laptop

I have 2 pieces of advice which I came to after my missus’ laptop had a (literal) meltdown last month from playing NW.

First, if possible, take to a computer repair shop and have them thoroughly clean it. Her temps dropped 40C (not exaggerating) from 90+C to 50+C after they cleaned all the fans and vents.

Second, use ThrottleStop. Free download and there’s plenty of how-to guides on YT and Google on how to run it. It’s taken my temps down from the 90s to the 70s, with no noticeable drop in performance.

We both use Acer Predator laptops BTW.
