Had the exact same thought. So many purple junk items in this game, this change would’ve made so many activities a lot more valuable to run. Truly a shame this isn’t coming.
Please reconsider. Chance to roll 3rd perk using umbral shards is absolutely great QoL that would make the otherwise sad salvage into anticipation of maybe great gear.
This was one of the most exciting changes to me. sad its been reverted…
This change was one of the biggest reasons I was coming back to play. The economy in this game makes gearing feel almost impossible to achieve BiS or something remotely close to BiS.
There is no constructive feedback possible to provide here. No one reviewed the patch notes before making them public and this has now become a bait and switch.
What the hell is going on at this studio…
Kind of happy this did not make it to PTR. I feel like it would kill crafting for good. It’s very interesting for super casual players but crafting gear would need a lot of help if this was implemented.
Bummer. Just so you know, this was very well received by everyone that I spoke to about this. The idea that purple gear would actually have the potential to be upgraded to end game gear was really exciting. Please consider adding this in a future update.
100%. I am very glad this was not included.
I selfishly very much want this change, but it will hurt crafters for sure.
maybe it will come back when crafters get to set the third perk, or guarantee a 600, or SOMETHING to combat very expensive and painful RNG.s

Holy cow, that was the only feature that I was excited about until the expansion in the end of the year…
I don’t agree that this change would hurt crafting since my 2 perk rolls could be sold on marketing. RN if I want to do a 3 perk resil +shirking fort I have to spend at least 120k to maybe get 1 triple perk, that’s probably gonna be useless, and 5 double perk that will sell for 500g to 1k. And that’s why no one is crafting on my server (fresh or legacy) and the legendary materials are being sold for 100g each =/
In the end nothing hurt more the crafters than the NW crafting system
How would it hurt crafters when craft mods and materials would plummet in price? Given all the changes people will to see the balance, people will need new gear and prices will sky rocket on the new meta build gear even if they random on it or craft it. Clever crafters will still be able to make money by creating buy orders for in demand perks.
well.
I can only speak for myself, and I have 595-600 armoring.
I would much rather do expeditions and chest runs and upgrade purps for <= 200 umbrals at a shot for 300 than try and get the same results via crafting.
So if it would be easier for me to get the gear I want not from a crafter, than I can’t imagine Im the only one, aka less demand for crafted gear…
let’s look at this: how many purples have you salvaged with Shirking Fort / Freedom / Resil…
there is a real good chance based on what was described above you’d get the third pirk you want LONG before and for a LOT less money than buying from a crafter, or crafting for yourself, not to mention ward sets…
Again, I love this idea, and I’m a freeking crafter. The crafting system is pretty busted and this would make pure crafters even sadder… I don’t want that… CATCH22~!

Why was this reverted?! There was a lot of us looking forward to this heavy QOL improvement. Please bring this back.
Improvement?? Legit NONE of you put any thought into anything you say so you want to kill all pve and all crafting in this game? Awesome, at this point just turn this game into a creative mode pvp game where you can spawn in gear. Your ideas have to be a joke
Such a shame. You could have at least kept it for specific mutation dungeon drops which are BOP and wouldnt affect crafting such as the conditioning items or jewelry which have 2 perks when below 600GS and get a 3rd perk which comes froma specific pool when dropped as 600GS(For e.g Myrkgard Amulet).
All items, once you use shards to upgrade them, become BoP.
Legit people just want to feel good about themselves spending 1million+ on their BIS gear by it remaining ludicrously expensive, if I rolled 5 BIS tomorrow there would still be items I’d want to play around with and maybe I’d spend some money in the wider economy, the economy has totally died since they introduced scarab farming because BIS is now almost mandatory and so ridiculously expensive to roll or buy, more 3 perk items would 100% be good for the game and lower the price of crafting for everyone and people would want to actually play the game as it would feel rewarding.
I guess you don’t play the game much or a War Logger/PvP’er. Gear is already massively random as it is. Crafting is a PITA. There are already a large amount of legendary items that drop/craft that are trash. If we had a 50/50 percent chance of getting BiS, yes, your comment is valid. But since it is not, your comment falls short/joke. Sorry.
As the other guys have said, think you should reconsider. I would love a reason to go back in the open world to do chest runs, random named bosses etc. Everything content wise is instanced and the only train runs are for scarab runs nowadays and the open world bosses have very little loot worth farming for. If it was resource intensive each time it could be a good gold/shard sink too.
There are a lot of epics that have very little value and are salvaged.
I don’t think the devs realize how much of an incentive this system would create for players to do all kinds of content that is extremely unrewarding currently.
For endgame players, purple items are instant salvages 100% of the time and it just feels extremely bad to get all this junk gear all the time that you can’t do anything with other than getting a couple repair parts and 3 coins for.
Please push this back onto the PTR. This would be a healthy change for the game. Too many people have quit because your gear system is such a high bar of entry into end game content.
If anything, make the PVP Track / OPR items follow the same system as the OPR weapons. It would incentivize OPR / PVP EXP farming, etc.
