I know this topic appears again and again, but I think we should push AGS developers to provide some public API for us.
We could use the API to create some amazing apps for stats, comparisons, builds, efficient exping/crafting/etc. Let us make something good for the NW community!
For now, the only way I know to get the data is reverse engineering the game only for static assets. But it would be also nice to get real live data like market prices or war/invasion info.
You won’t avoid that, they are going to introduce PvP rankings anyway. But honestly, there are such tools in other MMOs and I don’t see any toxicity in GW2, WoW or ESO.
You’re nitpicking dude. If someone is toxic, then you cannot do anything to change that. I met so many toxic ppl angry, because they died in the arena (on the voice/text chat). I just block them and I’m fine with that.
In other words… By your reasoning, it’s better for the game to shut down the servers because it gives people room to be toxic?
A public api can be used to create different addon’s that can make the game more easy, but it can also make it possible to create things that just make people more toxic.
World of Warcraft is a good example on this.
Devs before you consider OP’s suggestion, look at WoW’s forum and in-game chat’s, raids and dungeons. and you will be able to see how bad it can be when you allow such things as addon’s (a.k.a public api)
People are toxic these days and you don’t need addons for that. I’m a programmer, for me it’s a must have feature, because I would like to follow my passion and create something useful for everyone.
Anyways, you only search for negatives. Did you consider that new tools could attract new people? Now we have Brimstone, but in 1-2 months there will be no people on servers which makes this game boring for many. Some of them leave, because they are not able to understand the mechanics connected to crafting, damage calculation, etc. I always try to be “power gamer” in MMOs and try to have everything maxed out. I cannot imagine that I don’t have tools like nwdb.info or Aeternum Craft calculator…
But for sure it will commit some people to expose their toxicity - should we care about that? It’s not WoW’s community, where you have cross-server with over million players per day.
The funny part is, most of us don’t even want something that would enable toxicity. We want a read only API for player’s stats, that would most likely require auth, for helpers like those you mentioned.
Sure, some people want dps meters and such, but I’m fairly confident that’s not what most of us are asking for.
It is correct, you don’t need addons to be toxic, and people get toxic over practical nothing
But i am also a game developer, and i have made many mistakes - including what you are suggesting. People wanted something like your suggestion, i implemented it in my game. The result was a toxic playerbase, So much i had to pull the game from steam temporarily, so i could revamp it. it is back on steam, and it gave me a lesson on what you could make available for players
I won’t argue with that, but according to what @xyo says (I believe he is nwdb.info owner), we don’t need everything here.
The API can be limited to data that won’t make the community toxic. Most of the needs of users revolve around a few pieces of information about the game world, characters and crafting. I’m not saying that AGS should give us access to everything (which it certainly won’t), I’m saying that we need an API to be able to create interesting things, and it’s up to the developers what they decide to share with us.
Well, it depends what data you are looking for. There was another post on here recently asking for direct info on what items users were holding, how much gold, etc. I personally think exposing that information en-masse would make the game worse. Now, allowing you to access your own information in an authenticated (read-only) manner? I think that’d be rad and extremely helpful to a lot of players.
Other stuff that I wouldn’t see any problem including: world data. Stuff like faction control, town payrolls, company ownership, or trading post data.
Adding literally any of this to the game would be a massive improvement and I really do hope AGS considers it.
