Question about Dyes

Just mastered Cooking and looking to play around with dyes. When you attempt to dye a piece of armor, does it dye the actual piece of armor, the slot itself, or whatever skin you’re using?

Thanks for any insights or suggestions on dye usage. So far, all the videos I’ve seen relate to either how to get dyes or how to dye an item. Would appreciate any in depth knowledge about the system.

The dyes stay on the item not the slot; persists on item when the dyed item is re-equipped.

Ah, so that means that I have to use new dyes every time I upgrade my gear? Disappointing, since dyes are one-time use.
