I’m trying to better at dodging and get a clearer picture of how dodges and i-frames actually work, and if they need to be approached and timed differently in light/medium/heavy armor.
In a nutshell, what is the most efficient/ideal way to time your dodge?
Should it be…
1)when the opponent clicks an ability and starts the animation?
or
2)when the ability is mid-animation?
or
3)late stages just before the opponent weapon/ability animation hits you?
Also, if there is any difference in how light/medium/heavy should time things, please let me know.
There is no better teacher than experience. I suggest dueling people in different gear sets or queue OPR often in different builds. I know the latter half might be difficult to do since mutations busted the player activity… but after the new patch, OPR should be popping up more often. You can also practice on mobs to get a better feel - I suggest going to a high-level corruption node to really challenge yourself.
You can also try different weapons to see how timing is. This will help you know when to dodge when you’re on the receiving end.
IMO, dodging is really about 1) dodging damage and 2) dodging for distance (this is where knowing how certain weapons play helps). I would say focus on your positioning more and use your dodges to improve that. You should be trying to position yourself in a spot where you take minimal/no damage while also doing the most damage.
Also - heavy dodge is a slide, medium dodge is a hop, and light dodge is a roll. Heavy/light dodges cost 50 stamina, while medium costs 40 (30 if you have the 150 DEX perk). Why does medium dodge cost less than the other armor sets? We don’t know, we haven’t received an answer from the Devs.
I do understand “dodging for distance”, but I’m currently a heavy armor user and the short heavy dodge doesn’t seem to create any more distance than simply using WSAD. Therefore I’m more specifically interested in the timing of the heavy dodge to avoid damage with the i-frames.
Going back to my original question then:
What is the most efficient/ideal way to time your i-frame/dodge damage as a heavy?
Should it be…
1)when the opponent clicks an ability and starts the animation?
or
2)when the ability is mid-animation?
or
3)late stages just before the opponent weapon/ability animation hits you?
