Due to their plans to address an issue with Rings that was making them more powerful than they should, I think AGS should at least refund the Umbral Shards that were used to upgrade beyond 590.
Since this was an oversight on their part, that is the least they could do imho.
This needs to happen IF they apply the changes to all the rings that already dropped and not just the new ones.
I’m an old EverQuest player and I remember items being nerfed all the time but if you had earned it before the nerf you had an extra special “pre nerf” item.
EQ junky here. I still have my pre-nerf Circlet of Shadows and Fungi tunic hanging around on an old account somewhere, probably multiple lol. I actually made a post in regards to retroactively changing items, and how it sets bad precedent for the game.
The original post was about weaver’s ring (it used to be double luck), and my argument was that they should grandfather in the old items, but change the new drops going forward. Players spend a LOT of time and energy on grinding for their “perfect” set, only for devs to later admit that MANY items were released with “illegal” perks (this is 1 month post Brimstone release, and now 48 days since it was released on the PTR).
Retroactively changing items sets a really bad precedent. Honestly, it’ll probably take a site like nwdb.info to start flagging these “illegal” items as soon as they are released, and just forwarding it to the devs, every time there is a new content patch, for this to stop happening in the future. AGS apparently is unable to follow their own rules when randomizing loot, so maybe we should automate the “illegal item” check for them.

No one should have an item that’s not obtainable, except cosmetic stuff. This is one of the biggest things that breaks a game in the long run.
Legacy unobtainable items are a god awful idea, they obviously should be retroactively changed, but yeah they should refund the shards, after all no one knew their perks were bugged. If we knew it was bugged and still upgraded it it would have been on us, but that’s not the case.
These are fair points but the game have legacy items in it right now for things. Legendary shields being an example. It would probably make a wider range of people happier if they were all changed though.
No one’s happy about the existence of legendary shields though. If these old rings remain the same, people who don’t have these rings will keep complaining about them.
They should refund the shards, and also offer additional compensation, as some of these rings take quite a lot of time to farm
