Returning Player Expertise System is Awful

I returned to the end game after leaving in November because of the many large issues with the game. Bots and trading post lockout being some of the major reasons.

I did some watermark farming before I left so when I came back I find out I have at least a little expertise.

However since I’ve come back and been playing A TON the last two weeks I’ve noticed a lot of the game is for the better. However Expertise and by extension Gypsum are not.

Gypsum is a decent solution to a problematic system. Experise is clunky, annoying to deal with, confusing to newbie players, and just generally frustrating.

It sounds like the next patch addresses this a bit but I’m not sure its enough. Being sub 600GS limits me from doing 90% of end game content.

My options are basically Elite chest runs (happens once a day at 8AM pst on my server not exactly ideal), get lucky with an invasion invite or run my own tuning orbs.

PvP is not an option because I just get dumpstered by 625 GS players in any content I take part in.

Explaining the expertise system to my friends is the ONLY thing keeping them away from returning. It is a horrible system that is suffocating your playerbase. Remove or rework it completely its current iteration is abyssmal.

Tuning orbs are going away, honestly regular dungeons will get you to cap very, VERY quickly compared to any other methods. Otherwise there are a few new ways to speed up expertise on the PTR as well, there are new gypsum orbs that have no cooldowns as well.

I rail on this system almost daily, so i hope i’m helping some. <3

My brother will likely never come back to this game because expertise.

Doesn’t matter if it’s made easier. It feels like shit to come back to.

He’s just lazy then. Expertise is going baby mode next patch and is already easy this patch.

This is one of the big complaints everyone had that i know quit for. Empty friends list and several shuttered companies later, here we are. All we are doing at this point is chopping up the tuna and making it cheaper and pouring hot sauce on it.

I think a lot of people just don’t like the tuna. To quote luisant.

My biggest peeve was all the salvage for everything i did up to 600, dungeons, chest runs, every drop until 600 is just salvage and it feels bad. So unless you really have some time to kill and run dungeons every day, pretty much the fastest way. And use your gypsum for your trinkets, you’re going to be slogging away for garbage for a long while.

It just feels bad. It isn’t HARD, as some people like to remind, it is just incredibly inconvenient and not very intuitive.

It’s like, i dunno, Dungeons and Chests 101 since the dawn of games. Kill a boss, run a dungeon or loot a chest in the right place and get a chance at loot. Maybe you can use it, maybe you can sell it. Simple.

If you told me that i couldn’t use or sell anything i dropped from any source for a few weeks until i got my score up, and THEN my drops won’t suck anymore, i’d heavily rethink buying that game, it’s a no brainer. No one wants to salvage the ring they want 50 times until they get the one they can actually wear.

I think this is the big thing people aren’t getting and you hit the nail on the head. Grinding expertise is not hard, its dull AF and incredibly unsatisfying.

No one thinks you are a chad gamer for grinding out 625 gs. You just spent more time grinding a inherently flawed system (not directed at you Arcadia just speaking out loud).

So many people seem to reply to expertise criticisms with “well its not hard to do”, they are missing the point entirely.

I thought they were making it easier with this next patch, and removing orbs. If you don’t like it, take a hike.
It’s getting better. But ya’ cant come in and make demands when you haven’t been playing and then try to hold the room hostage.

So you dont want to do any content you just want to get to the max gear score immediately? In an mmo? I dont think theres a single mmo that lets you cap out your gear score as soon as you come back. Many of my mates and I have made alts on other servers. We capped GS within days simply running dungeons. This game is actually so much faster at reaching end game then most other mmos

Thank you for missing the point. And your constructive feedback. Really providing yourself as exhibit A for what I was just talking about. Cheers.

If that’s your message to new and returning consumers with a dying brand, I hope you’re never CEO of anything.

Its funny they brought out 3v3s and still make people grind for a week just to get to 600. Saying it isn’t as bad as the old days of 1.5 months of chest runs does not mean people want to do it. If the game is fun, it does not need time wasting garbage to keep people playing.

You don’t understand. First, this system exists in no other MMO. So stop evoking the genre.

Second, grinding for gear isn’t the problem. Expertise is. The system is not fun or interesting. It’s tantamount to having players fill out a bunch of forms before they can play the game. Busy work. Boring.

And in case you’re new to gaming, boring is THE death knell for games.

Are they not making it easier or is everyone just ignoring that and wanting it eradicated right now, as if that’s going to happen?

Majority of the current player base already has 600 expertise so the update does next to nothing. 500-600 expertise currently only exists to gatekeep returning/new players from new content. We have 600-625 junk to constantly grind, so 500-600 is not needed.

Why should it be given to returning/new players? …So they return? Seems like they’re trying to make it easier for returning/new players.

Aren’t you gate keeping as well if you were to say they shouldn’t just get 625 right away?

“It sounds like the next patch addresses this a bit but I’m not sure its enough.”

From my original post.

TBH not gonna reply to anymore people on this. Tired of repeating myself and people not getting the point.

Hi peache.ak, thank you for bringing your opinion of Expertise to the forums, I also enjoy seeing all the player comments as well. I will forward this post up the chain so the Dev team can read through as well. Have a great day!

They seem unable to accept the fact that its their system thats bad in its essence, and instead of removing it, they just keep trying to “make it easier” for people. Its insane IMO

I thought expertise drops where from the 2 endgame dungeons where you need to be geared already or has that changed?
