Returning player with a few questions

I just came back after 4 months and have a few questions.

  1. Is it better to buy BIS gear or buy the mats to craft? Seems like 3 perks is a longshot, but these 3 perk monsters in the trading post are coming from somewhere. I heard 3 perks you want is like a 1/600 chance. Is any crafting profession profitable for gear?

  2. Is 2 bis perk gear worth upgrading with shards? 3 perk gear seems so expensive and time consuming, that it would be unrealistic to expect to have these by 600 expertise when you want to start running mutations.

Hi, also returning player, haven’t played since Endwalker dropped.

What are mutations, what is expertise, and what is a “Rafflebones?”

Unless you get super lucky in the lotto, you will save money selling mats and buying someone else’s luck imo

Mutations are like mythic plus wow. They are harder versions of normal dungeons that require higher gear score. You get umbral in them you can use to raise gear score from 600-625.

Expertise is similar to gear score. It determines what level gear you can wear and what level gear will drop. It is a separate grind.

Rafflebones is a random spawn mob they added that drops umbral and weapons. If you find him you have to kill him before he explodes.

2 good perks are worth upgrading.

When you spend Gypsum orbs at a slot thats GS600+ you’ll get 100-400 umbral shards.

Those BiS 3 Perk items are supposed to be your longtime goal, you either craft them or buy them its up to you and the rng gods.

Mutations are different buffs to the Dungeons which will force you to Adapt your playstyle.
Finishing mutated dungeons awards you with umbral shards depending on the Level of the Mutations (1-10).

Neat.

I think long term it’s cheaper to save your money and buy gear. You can try to craft. Maybe you get lucky and roll a bis, but chances are you won’t. Also if it’s a good 2 perk it’s worth it to get it to like 615-20 to help you get into higher mutations for sure. The third perk isn’t a huge deal.

id be looking forward for the new gear sets with new perks but for now id grab purple 2 perks and slowly get better pieces

as of before the blunderbuss patch the odds of crafting a BiS piece of armor was sitting at 1/2280 if you pick a weapon perk for the armor. to craft a BiS chest piece without using a weapon perk for PvP using your own mats would take you over 200 years. so as @Soluss has said you are far better buying all your pieces and selling craft mats.

you also could get a voidbent head/chest crafted for a decent med pve/pvp start, voidbent has dropped alot in price

i started with getting my voidbent head/chest to 625 then used the gypsum caches to get the rest of my gear up faster

Someone on my server was trying to sell the entire set for 35k. Very reasonable starter set.

  1. Buy it, crafting is a waste of time and money unless you’ve got gold to burn.

  2. BIS gear is very expensive, 100k at the low end. Get gear with 2 perks you want, maybe get a third if you see something you’d like.

Run expeditions based on gear you want, but I’ve bought everything in this game. Personally I cant be bothered depending on the RNG in this game.
