Let me start by saying Ive loved both Winter convergence and the summer medleyfaire. I loved the new camps popping up and I definitely love the aesthetics of the world whenever something like this happens… but I have one problem… the gameplay loop for the events is… not good.
I grinded the medleyfaire… I wanted all the rewards. But what came from that is I started to hate the event more and more as time went on. Because the game forced me to do something that I didnt want to do…fishing. As much as I can appreciate the mechanics and the laid back vibes that fishing offers, its probably the one thing I really dont enjoy doing in this game, for whatever reason.
But my point isnt just fishing. Its the fact that these events tie dedicated players to play in ways we may not want to play. Isnt the whole point for these events to encourage more player engagement and give us something to do? So why cant we chose how we want to play the game and have the option of how we want to earn these rewards?
I really do appreciate the idea that went behind these events but I think adding some sort of progression system (perhaps a seasonal battle pass) that progresses and gives rewards for players when earning xp from doing whatever they want to do? Additionally you can encourage players to do relavent tasks that you want them to do, and reward them with bonus xp towards the battle pass, things like daily and weekly missions. Example: instead of forcing fishing down player’s throats, let them earn xp any way they want but offer bonus xp each day for catching certain fish, playing certain songs, etc.
To add to the above, I think mount a catch station was also a really nice add that wouldve allowed this to work. People who wanted the additional rewards and trophies can fish while the people who are after the general rewards like cosmetics, furniture, pets, etc could gain them from the battle pass. This would not have taken away from the maestro as you can offer additional tokens from the battle pass and have the maestro still sell things like foods, patterns, vials, etc.
Although I really enjoy these events and look forward to each of them, I really dont think forcing players to play a certain way (especially when that certain way is doing one of the least popular trade skills) is neither healthy for the game nor the players.
I feel like the this event was just a worse clone of the winter convergence fest. This event feels like it only exists to try to force players to level up their fishing. this would be fine for those who havent finished their fishing, but for players who already leveled their fishing this feels like punishment more than a fun event.
It most definitely was a clone from the winter event. And I think even if someone didnt have 200 fishing, its because they dont enjoy it to begin with… so why force a player to do something they dont have fun doing? especially in an event… where its supposed to be “fun”.
I disagree with the OP. It was an event, and an entirely optional one. You don’t even have to fish to level max rep and the tokens are free in every town
The FOMO is on you, not the devs. None of the rewards are must-haves, they are just fun things, except the green patterns which are great – but also non-essential. The event is on for so long even very casual players can get a lot of rewards.
It was a fun event and exactly how game events should be, except possibly too long. I don’t like fishing either, but if an event doesn’t change up everyday player patterns, why would you even have one?
Nothing in this game is mandatory… you can easily avoid doing 90% of the features in the game… to say “too bad it was optional” is a completely wrong way of looking at it and a spit in the face of players that commit their time to this game, wait months for content, then get something they wouldn’t have fun doing.
no one is talking about fomo, it’s a limited time event I don’t see how you can possibly proceed without fomo.
change up every day patterns? what benefit does changing play styles do when players are forced to do something they don’t enjoy? isn’t the point of a video game to be for enjoyment?
every addition to a game should have the general player base’s best interest in mind. this does not. like I mentioned, they did not have to stray away from the fishing and music emphasis, they can still keep the theme and the focus without shoving it down players throats. I feel like you’re missing the point of what events are supposed to accomplish. and I can promise you if they don’t change up the formula, the player tolerance will get worse with every event.
