I have given up on OPR entirely now on my main server. As a small group of friends, we returned to the game a couple months ago and found ourselves on Nysa/Dry Tree (following merges when we were absent from the game). We deliberately transferred to one of the new servers (not fresh start, just “overflow” in preparation for Brimstone). It was so nice when the server was young and not too busy and I actually enjoyed OPR quite a lot initially (despite telling myself I wouldn’t bother with it because it was horrendous when I quit the game initially).
There were only a handful of what I’d call BIS players and of course teams weren’t always balanced so some matches were still steamrolls. When I dipped my toes into OPR again, I did so in entirely PVE gear and of course I was very weak (and lacking experience) but I was willing to give it a try because the PVP track sounded fun. I found I could compete as I progressed through the PVP track. Slowly but surely, as I put together a rudimentary PVP set (mostly epics or very imperfect named PVP legendaries with resilient and shirking, all missing freedom - weapons with attuned and vicious and, of course, the entirely too necessary mortal empowerment ring), I was starting to compete and hold my own. I was enjoying it. All of the “bad egg” players from the old days were gone, I couldn’t see any exploits being used and it was beginning to be an enjoyable experience. I will say this, I’ve not seen many exploits at all which is one of the main good points.
So, I was looking forward to working towards a BIS set slowly whilst enjoying OPR. Quite a few times, I’d find myself in a small scale fight versus players who I could tell were around my ability/gear level and, win or lose or draw, these fights were so much fun. But then, it all changed.
One after another, the BIS companies started transferring in. After the first, you began to see the same names appearing in groups. It was usually only one group but whichever side they were on… steamroll. But at certain times of the day, they’d be offline so you could avoid them. Then the next big company transferred in. Global chat suddenly got all aggressive, of course. Yay. And then you had two or three groups in OPR, all BIS. One guy even posted a wonderful YT video showing off his “2m gold BIS gear” so we could all see just how hard he worked for his stuff.
Over the period of about a month, several more companies appeared, all BIS and they’re all competing for territory with each other. Maybe one syndicate company that I’d call “incumbent” when we joined still somewhat compete there. Mostly, the rest have faded away.
The last time I tried playing OPR over the period of a week, every single match was a steamroll in some way because literally every single hour of the day, these transferring companies were heavily represented. I can still sort of compete (and can get a positive K/D frequently), rarely in isolation when I face up against players who are similar to me and more frequently only if I was supported by a bunch of BIS players versus a pack of slightly fewer BIS players. And that’s if they decided they’d actually want to work as a team; frequently they did not.
One cherished memory I have that exemplifies this was when I was pushing the opposing team’s first fort with our pack, and all the opposing team’s ranged were perched on the rocks to my right as we did so. There was a healer on my side right next to me, one of these BIS guys. He was attacking someone with his life staff, ignoring me as I got peppered by the ranged on the rocks. I died right next to him, as he continued to shoot his staff at some guy his mates were chasing down as a group.
Usually, all they wanted to do was push to the opposing team’s spawn area and finish the match as quickly as possible, often finishing the match with their 20-30 kills in about 5-8 minutes and leaving the rest of us to pick up the scraps and maybe get 500xp, even if we’re on their team. And if you’re not?
Might as well not have bothered queueing.
So, gear up, right? Yeh sure, OK. Anyone who knows anything about this game knows that getting even one single BIS item costs, in some way, an extreme amount of resource. Back before all these guys joined the server, I saw BIS items for around 150k gold on the AH. This was, I thought, reasonable. Something to aim for. So I started saving gold. This is not something I can do easily and the most gold I think I ever had before spending it was 30-40k. Well, now I have 160k gold.
The same items I was looking at back then, for 150k gold, now sell for 350k gold. Oh and that’s the usual crap of “c/o”, meaning the person selling it is probably making up an auction to artificially pump up their price. The thing is? These companies who moved in (there are now about 8 of them last time I counted) can pay that.
Anyway, FSS came out and I started an alt there. I am flagged 90% of the time and jump to help my faction whenever anyone asks for help at a fort or pushing. I’ve encountered lots of open world PVP on this character and have made sure to equip good gear (faction gear is awesome for PVP as you level up, more so as you can equip it before you can equip normal gear of the same gear score and it always has resilient on it).
I’ve never had more fun with PVP in the game than now. I’ve won fights and I’ve lost fights. I’ve been ganked by more players and I’ve been obliterated by level 60s (I guess scaling got totally thrown out at some point?) I’ve made friends with some of the people I’ve fought and I’ve made friends with people I’ve fought with. It’s been absolutely amazing. And this is mostly because most of the fights I’ve had aren’t against full BIS elites. Even where I’ve been outmatched 1v1 (skill or levels or whatever), I felt like I wasn’t that far away. And I’ve even started holding my own when 2v1, which is something I’ve never been confident with (I am happy to admit I am learning when it comes to NW PVP, I am no expert).
I am looking forward to getting to 60 and I think that OPR will probably be quite fun for a short period of time before the server catches up and too many BIS players take over; I will try to enjoy it as much as possible before then; who knows, maybe I’ll even just join one of these companies and then I can be BIS as well? My point, in all of this, is to say that PVP in NW can be fun and it’s usually when you’re matched up against players of a similar status to you (I’ll say “status”, as a catch all for skill/gear/levels and so on).
The sooner AGS can facilitate OPR where you’re matched against players of a similar status to you… the better. It can be done.
