I have been noticing an issue when it comes to the sweep ability with the spear.
It seems like people are able to dodge out of the knockdown immediately after being knocked down if they just spam the dodge button.
It is happening so often now that sweep is basically unusable in pvp. This was not an issue at all pre patch so something must have changed with the new patch.
Sweep is the spears main ability and now the weapon is essentially dead in the water.
This could be an instance of the so-called free “breakout dodge” which will proc a light armor-style dodge automatically after being cc’d a certain amount of times in a certain window.
It’s a mechanic that has been referenced by the devs but not well explained how it’s supposed to work.
That would be the case if it had always done that. But before the patch I could stagger them stun and then knock down and it would never give them any roll.
Now even if you hit the sweep by itself they can just roll out immediately
I wouldn’t assume that the way the game operated before is the way it will continue to operate. As you just said, what you’re running across is appears to be new.
So the question is what changed game mechanic caused it. It might not be spear-specific per se.
Hey thought I would answer this. Have been testing this for the past week and trying to figure out how to trigger this “breakout dodge”. It seems to be a problem where the grit state on an enemy is still active through stun. The knock down from the trip is performed during the stun so grit does not block it but once they hit the ground, grit reactivates. To reproduce the bug follow these steps:
- Have someone you are fighting activate a grit ability/attack
- Stun them with the spears kick or shockwave from the hammer
- knockdown the stunned target with sweep, clearout, or wrecking ball
- Have the enemy dodge while on the ground and see the free roll
Why I believe this to be unintended… regardless of armor, the roll is a legacy light roll (prior to patch 1.05’s light roll modification) and costs nothing. A breakout mechanic usually has a cost to it (think of using your gauge in a fighting game to stop a combo) and in this circumstance it is free with no cost or cooldown. Still testing for other circumstances that this comes up.
TL;DR - Stunning someone while grit, then knocking them down gives the person a cc breaking light roll
This 100%. It needs to be addressed immediately. This is a get out of jail free card for falling into a combo and it completely breaks any balance or competitive play. I’d love to see what others would feel like if they landed a stun onto someone only to be reverse punished with a combo when the target shouldn’t be capable of doing anything because of a bug.
This legitimately needs to be addressed immediately. I also have noticed this and tested it thoroughly in duels.
Someone mentioned it might be a “breakout dodge” if you’ve been hit by too many CC’s, however there are numerous factors to consider:
- This doesn’t work for me when I get hit by 3,000 aoe hammer CC’s in OPR/War despite spamming dodge constantly.
- This didn’t ever happen before the patch, this is new
- This happens even when they’ve only been hit with a total of 1 CC prior (Vault kick → Sweep → they breakout light roll for free, even in heavy armor).
This is completely gutting the entire toolkit spear has. Spear generally doesn’t function well outside of light armor, and medium to an extent (light roll mobility is pretty huge for a weapon with no mobility/gap closer perks, especially if you dare to catch anyone in lighter armor). This means that the general combat tactic of spear is to utilize the heavy CC ability to fight tanky bruisers who are dangerous to take head on.
If more people learn about this, it will be impossible to have a reasonably fair fight. GA/War hammer have grit on on virtually every ability and 300 STR makes light/heavy swings grit automatically. They’re immune to sweep like 80% of the time, besides carefully timing a sweep at the butt-end of a Shockwave, for example. Without the ability to neutralize grit briefly with Vault Kick, it’s insanely hard to use sweep or the javelin knockdown.
I love spear and have played it since day 1, and I haven’t had many complaints, but this is absolutely crucial. If sweep/javelin can’t be utilized, what can spear do besides try to fight big tanky bois head on?
Edit: Someone mentioned it involves grit reactivating, but this isn’t true from my testing (can upload video soon), even without grit, any Vault Kick → Sweep combo seemed to be easily escaped with breakout light dodge roll (in heavy armor).
Also noticed this issue & that Grit is not applying to Sweep
In case devs need more footage ![]()
you can continue bumping this thread here since it got the most views MASSIVE Spear bug with Sweep (Video) ((New Video Added)) - #14 by Drakon_A
Unfortunately, I think fixing spear is the last on their list considering how many people use it as their weapon…
THIS is still broken. What the absolute hell.
Been dueling someone with grit, get a shockwave off, sweep and before I can follow up with the spear slam via 3rd tree perk, they roll out. Free of cost.
I’ve had this bug happen with people who are running full dex builds. This is not limited to enemies with the 300 str perk.
U can also block knockdown as u can see in this video:
u can see the sns user gets fully stunned and gets hit by sweep but by holding block or dodging at the right time theyll get out
That has nothing to do with blocking or dodging at the right time. All of this is caused by the grit bug, which I made a post and video on over a month ago, but they still haven’t and prob never will fix it.
This need to be addressed and is definitely not a “feature” that is an absurd conclusion. Yes it is a feature that when applying a knockdown, the target gets a free dodge roll. Ridiculous.
This bug also leaks over to vault kick as well. I don’t have the specifics how how to reproduce it, but more and more lately, vault kick hits, shows damage, yes the target gets out of a subsequent regular melee attack which should be impossible. Hello they are stunned.
I’m already dealing with constant groups of AIMBOT musket exploiters who are hitting 100% headshot rates from halfway across the map through the trees and then if I’m even able to catch up to them stuns and knockdowns are completely ineffective. Its getting to the level of completely ridiculous. Every new feature the game releases without banning the exploiters and fixing the game breaking bugs like the one above just makes me a little more untrusting in the competence of the devs.
This bug is still happening. I saw another post saying that if you stun someone while they have grit active, if you break the stun with a non-stun cc, then they won’t get cc’d properly. One thing the post sait to try is double stun them before attempting any staggers/knockdowns or just try to stun them when they don’t have grit active (which really makes grit far more powerful than it should be).
I believe the devs said the breakout is free.
Basically they said it’s actually meant for PVE to keep players from being pinned and CC’d by mobs.
The breakout is free and is a light armor roll regardless of what armor the player is wearing.
Least thats how i understood it. A CM posted info about it a while back.
To stun lock people and not trigger the breakout a common chain is dodge sweep (with coup specced) light attack, light attack dodge vault kick. Rinse repeat
