Selfish players vacuum up all the Squash while others are fighting. There’s often no respite from the fighting because there are many mobs nearby and they respawn very fast. It’s common for someone to be mobbed by 3-4 enemies while other people just go in and gather up all the Squash quest items.
Mark them as quest items and limit the amount you can gather.
