Stagger, stun, burst

3 words to sum up the entire state of PvP right now.

There is no longer any skill involved in PvP in this game. at all. Its all about chaining staggers and stuns and then bursting. The TTK is lower than call of duty in new world atm.

Is anyone out there actually enjoying this horrid dogshit state of PvP currently? Anyone genuinly feeling satisfied when they get a kill?

Im forced to run a build with 4 staggers and a stun, I can 100-0 an enemy without them ever having any ability to control their character because stagger has no diminishing returns. If I have my detonate ready its even harder GG.

This is so damn dogshit.

Well, other games would counter that with abilities, but NW has none.

Playing GW2 nowadays which as Stability as a pre-buff against CC, if you need to CC someone with that buff, you need to remove the buff first.

Other than that, some CC like fear can be cleared with a lot of abilities.

Makes for an interesting gameplay.

Combat in NW is horrible atm.

Summon white knights to defend it.

Afraid to see the “competitive” scene coming for the next month. It will be a complete joke and with the current state of pvp i guess a mass leave will inc soon.

Very true. The shit thing about the leaderboards is that it will truly highlight which builds can stat pad harder then the rest and then EVERYONE will be playing the same build to stay competitive.

Things are only gonna keep getting worse and worse untill this game eats itself.

PvP is not even remotely balanced.

i know it will be hard for you, but go heavy armor

I already switched to medium. In heavy it’s impossible to catch all the bows and muskets at that point there is no purpose in even logging into the game.

And even if i went heavy it won’t change the dynamic of pvp one bit. Combat still revolves around hard CC and burst.

so you’re saying you’re playing just to chase ranged players?

It’s kinda essential to be capable with there being so many ranged.

But heavy is also a death sentence. You’re not any more resistant to cc but you will deal significantly less DMG and have no mobility

it’s not about being resistent to cc, but to damage, if you don’t want to be cc to death - go get it, you will have a chance to fight back

Ofc TTK is very low, why? Because everyone plays light armor glass cannon builds - high dmg, low survivability.

Its evident players do like this meta because they created it.

Stagger/CC chain kills exist because of low survivability of a victim.

Tbh medium is the meta for melee currently and it doesn’t matter if players are medium or heavy. Ttk is still ultra fast.

1v1? You have 3 dodges, you got like 13k HP, you got blocks, potions etc. Medium 1v1 definitely isn’t that quick.

A well designed PVP game has counters built in for each CC type. Currently the only counter to Stagger/Knockdown and the resulting damage is having 5/5 Resilient, 150+ Con, Medium Armor and the right Gems/Wards to protect from the current meta of Stagger/Stun/Burst weapon choices.

  • Stuns = Freedom
  • Slows = Freedom
  • Roots = Freedom
  • Stagger = Nothing
  • Knockdown = Nothing
  • Silence = Does not exist (maybe someday)

This to me, indicates that the current development team does not have a good understanding of their combat system with regards to the way players utilize it for PVP encounters. The recovery animations for Staggers/Knockdowns are long enough that you can fit a huge burst of damage into that recovery window, chaining into the next Stagger/Knockdown/Stun → Stagger/Knockdown. The absolute loss of control of your character during the Stagger/Knockdown → Stun → Stagger/Knockdown chain indicates a poorly designed combat system.

Without the addition of a way to prevent or recover faster from Stagger/Knockdown, PVP combat devolves into which builds can do several Staggers/Knockdowns, Stuns and fit high Burst damage in between these windows. This devolution of combat forces most players to utilize the weapons that best allow this current Stagger/Stun/Burst Meta, which reduces weapon/build diversity, which is bad for the game.

Will AGS resolve these issues in 2023? :man_shrugging:

Since launch*

It’s always been like that. We’re on month 16 of the extremely skillful “BIG GRAV ON ME” meta. Gwell buff last spring and addition of detonate rune was just AGS further reinforcing it.

Although a big factor is that lifestaff invalidates everything except CC into burst. Sacred ground easily outheals any sustained dps builds. Which is why everyone wants chain and RM, since autos are only good for building ult and lowering cds.

As we talked in game few days ago… Small Scale pvp is trash because of detonation rune … u have 13k HP 2 bruisers with detonation take you 13k- 0 instantly. This is bullshit, everything before this shitty detonaton rune was good… Whole pvp is now take detonation and kaboom inside zerg…

Arenas and 1v1 are not that fast tbh… ok they are if u don’t dodge oponent’ abilities, but this is mistake right ?

2 hand weapons with CC will always dominate group pvp ever since they removed stagger from basic and heavy attacks. Bring it back and way more build variety opens up since the faster 1 hand weapons can get their stagger chain going quicker than the 2 handers. It also conveniently makes life staff way more killable. The whole combat system was designed around stagger existing and it continues to fail to solve balance without it. (I linked a long detailed thread about it in a comment above)

This will never happen though, the game is moving further away from that level of skilled combat bc it wants to be as popular as WoW which means appealing to the average MMO player.

It’s pretty shit, I miss the beta with stagger and only having 3 skills to use even though you had 2 weapons. Besides the hatchet being to fast attack speed wise for the stagger it was tactical and I enjoyed it
