Just wondering how long it will take devs to acknowledge the Sword and Shield issues:
Sword and shield have attributes split in half. And attributes on shield only apply when sword is the active weapon. Meaning you say have Sword and shield as your first weapon and Hatchet as your second you will be losing attributes whenever you take out hatchet.
And before ppl say “you’re not losing stats but gaining them!” I’ll say bruh, sword has half the stats any other weapon has. The other half is on shield. Go figure.
By playing sword and shield you’e literally hardlocked into Heavy equip load. Because SHIELD WEIGHTS. I have no idea why that’s even a thing, but shield weight counts towards equip load.
Meaning, you can’t mix and match light/medium and heavy pieces to get the optimal defensive stats for light and medium load like any other weapon. With shield giving no defensive stats on its own you will have a major decrease in elemental/physical defense with just round shield equipped.
And afaik you can’t even reach light load with kite or tower shield equipped, and have to get multiple light pieces to keep under medium load using these.
So can devs finally stop gimping Sword and Shield?
Agree with OP 100%, shield being the way it is now is a direct result of a problem that occurred earlier before release of people running with a shield equipped for stats even tho they didn’t S&S. At the time just wearing it gave stats, I get that had to be fixed but I see no reason why they can’t put a true false if shield equipped true and sword equipped true then stats. If shield equipped true and sword equipped false no stats.
I’m full light armor and round shield, and I’m still 13.0 weight and can dodge roll. I even have a medium head piece but it’s the skinner Hat. I guess you didn’t know round shield weigh less than the kite or tower shields?
You can’t state it “Hardlocks” you into heavy equip load when it simply doesn’t at all… You just have to sacrifice the armor/resistances for the best evasive dodge and a damage bonus.

I did mention that with just round shield equipped you’re losing stats because you can’t equip medium pieces to stay in low load. And I did say you can’t even reach light load with kite/tower. Never did I mention you can’t reach light with round.
You said people are “locked”. That’s absolutely untrue. Whether they’re incentivized or not is another story.
I’ll also go ahead and say that this is just another one of the millions of issues that came into being because of the completely unnecessary and for the worse overhaul of the combat system. Before New World decided to transform its original, realistic and interesting combat system into a clone of any ordinary, generic MMO, every piece of equipment had a purpose. The kite shield was the shield of choice for heavier than light encumbrance choices. Nowadays the buckler and kite shield are seen as lower tier shields than the tower shield which itself is a weird and exaggerated looking shield if you ask me.
I agree about the armor. The shield has multiple things about it that seem not well thought out but you mention how it’s half the points. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think you might be mistaken on how the stats work exactly.

Just examples of what rolls could be that would be same tier and lvl
Shield +8 str/con, sword+8 str/con
Hatchet +10 str +5 con or +16str
Basically you need the shield to get the full amount you would get on any other weapon. I’m not saying it’s not dumb because it is but if they didn’t do that you would have double the amount of +whatever then other classes. So they just cut what normal weapons would give you in half and made it be one together.
The shield needs a rework though and hatchet should be able to use one as well as it has a perk that works well for clerics.
My suggestion would be take all the stats off shield give it a hard limit of defense depending on what shield let/Med/Hvy and assigned weight tier replace the swords shield tree with a “shieldless” tree and make the shield its own 2 trees depending if you heal or tank.
I’m aware how the stats work. All the devs need to do to fix the first issue is just moving attribute points fully to sword. Sword all stats, shield none. Ez pz.
That probably wouldn’t fix the 2nd problem entirely but would let people play sword entirely without shield without losing quite a lot of stats (15 at 600 GS).
But to fix the problem entirely they need to either treat shield fully as a weapon (weapon weight doesn’t count towards equip load) or give them defensive stats you’d otherwise lose by wearing lighter armor pieces.
