we have a normal group doing dungeons, and the tank friend is frustrating, he normally can get control of the mobs, and now when he uses the taunt skill, mobs will direct run to the healer, he does everything, the taunt skill is not working for him, and he has the 300 taunt gem in the weapon, as DPS I have to chase the mob after the healer, god is anybody else experiencing the same?
I also noticed some issues. I can’t really tell what it is, but taunt isn’t reliable. Not sure if it is delayed or has some range issues or mobs “resisting” it. But something is wrong.
Be a focus paladin tank… try it.
Tell your friend this and see if it helps
New World threat for tanking is controlled by a couple of things - incoming damage, incoming healing, and taunt abilities.
Threat is reduced when you are hit by enemies.
Using a taunt ability sets your threat higher than the current highest level. So if you engage with a taunt, you go to higher than 0 threat. If you immediately take a bunch of damage, then are healed, this will likely set the healers threat to be higher than yours, as your threat is reduced and the healer’s is increased.
Tl;Dr: make sure that the tank doesn’t taunt until enemies have tried to attack others, or it’s a particularly scary enemy.
Some notes on New World Tanking.
Ensure your party is allowing the tank to agro the cluster of mobs first, the mobs in New World operate on “move lists”. Meaning, if they selected a targetr for an ability or attack, they will chase that target until they can complete the move on the list. The only way to prevent the chasing is the stun+taunts. I.E. Shield Bash / Shockwave.
If you have trigger happy ranged dps, they will scatter the mobs, forcing ur AoE taunt to not work until each mob chases down their target for the single attack on the movelist, then they will turn to the taunter IF the taunt is still an active debuff on the target. If they have the chase for long enough for the taunt to drop, they will never move to the tank, in my experience.
My healers only have to worry about agro from adds, and make sure they move them towards you for an easy AoE Shockwave or turned shield bash.
You cannot rely on a taunt unless it also has a stun to wipe the movelist on the mob, otherwise AoE taunt will work if your dps waits until after ur shield taps to start.
Taunt is definitely wonky, the only surefire taunts that work are those on mobs that are stunnable. Just make sure your dps keep it in their pants until the mobs cluster on the tank, which is also a best practice to max aoe’s.
As a tank, practice interrupting damage with stuns early in the pull, both to save the healer agro, and to wipe the mob’s movelist and reset agro on u. Shockwave is ur bestie.
Cheers
Thanks all for the replies and feedback, I’m said tank in the main post. My main problem is you can allow the initial phase (attacks) to happen and you use your taunts/shield bash etc. and the mobs just seem to ignore it. I will see if I can adapt my play style to include the mentions above but I have tried multiple different approaches to it and the same thing happens.
In all the MMO’s I’ve played I generally end up being a tank due to the enjoyment of leading the charge and I like to help people do things. Maybe Im just looking at how its been previously instead of trying something different. To me this game is lacking something in regards to tanking and the taunts just seem to be alittle part of whats missing.
Is there such thing as having too much hated on your weapons?
Also if any of you are on Eden (not sure about other servers) at the minute we have the most amount of lag I have seen since the start of the game, Im from the EU on a US server but only since this patch have I suffered with the lag
i still think is broken, i meant any other MMO taunt will last for a while not just because the tank got hit and lose aggro.
Not broken, maybe unintuitive for someone who is just used to much simpler systems.
Managing threat isnt just a tank-only duty, its an group effort.
Other MMORPGs trivialized tanking to a point where the Tank could Pop its taunt and go afk for several minutes without loosing threat.
With the reduction in beeing pushed around like a feather on PTR, tanking is in a good spot, at least in terms of PvE.
His sword probably needs to be repaired.
it is stressful
Taunt doesn’t seem to have snap ago in this game so if the mob is already in the middle of something it won’t start to take effect until after the mob completes the action.
