I am really curious if the steam page is a typo or if people running DX11 could be stuck with issues.
This whole line of thought came from seeing @IDarkStar talking about using Win 11 in a different thread and how after he went to win 11 and tweaked some settings he saw huge gameplay improvements.
I believe Win 11 defaults to DX12 because of the deeper integration it has in win 11.
The game was running dx12 in beta, but they switched to dx11 for release. Don’t know why and the only comment i can find is from this interview:
Game performance should definitely be better with DX12
Lawrence: We’ll definitely have DX12. It’s not necessary for our launch, but it’s something we think we’ll get done fairly quickly after launch.
SEA servers coming SOON!
Morales: In the next wave of new markets, we’re about to launch a new region in Spain. We’re about to launch a new region in the Asia Pacific, in Jakarta, Indonesia. This is a great beginning. We’re excited to help New World scale and launch globally when they’re ready.
Not sure, i know a lot of cards that people probably have are not actually DX12 ready, and the ones that say they are, are only partially compatible aside from the newest ones. So who knows o.o it’s a good question
The true difference between 9-12, or for that matter 11 vs 12, or say vulkan is just better core utilizations. Most games at best utilize 2- 4 cores, twelve has the ability to changes that significantly. There are outliers like Vulkan which is just better from a multiple platform perspective(think not using windows).
Ya’ll are hung up on the GPU side of things, but the bigger jump is being able to leverage more cpu cores for more things. The draw back is 12 is newer and still needs lots of work so you end up with problems more often.
The real question here is not 11 vs 12 in New World. The question is why in the hell are they using lumberyard? They aren’t using Vulkan which would at least make sense. Just seems like making things harder on themselves for no real good reason other then maybe saving a few dollars, not hating on cryengine just curious why???
I feel like I live in the stone age most games are still 2 cores 4 threads as a minimum. We got all these damn cores on current hardware going to waste. Does Emperor Palpatine voice I want them to witness the power on my fully operational Death Star( PC).
Edited to remove the vulcan that snuck into my talking about api’s.
Edited again because I noticed I have both star wars, and star trek references in the same post. It’s like crossing beams. I expect a Big Bang! At least I don’t look like the nerd/geek I actually am.
O3DE is a good engine, but there’s a lot of argument about how good, or not good the Azoth engine is for the networking side of things, or rather that most of the issue with lag and desync is in the backend, and for that DX12 would not help that issue from what i understand.
DX12 would however give high end systems a lot more headroom that have fully capable hardware, but it would stress mid tier systems that are not fully DX12 compliant. That’s my best guess why they left it disabled.
That’s putting it mildly, O3DE isn’t just an update or an upgrade.
To quote people that know more than myself on the topic.
“This isn’t simply lumberyard going opensource. It’s had 2m+ lines of code stripped and it’s math libs replaced, a new renderer and new networking. In short it’s massively improved and guided by Linux Foundation.”
I know they are banking on the fact that it has the “potential” to be one of the best. But as i understand it’s got work to do.
I am using Layman’s terms not to confuse casuals.
It is an upgrade. Actually it was released by a subsidiary of the Linux Foundation on the Apache 2.0 open source license. Not trying to split hairs, but it’s just upgraded lumberyard at the end of the day. Once again coming back to it’s amazon why sand bag yourself to save a few bucks.
How else are they going to advertise their graphics engine, if their own games don’t use it? That’s what i think it really boils down to in the end. They want people to use their engine, and this is the model they are using to do it.
That’s why i suspect they will continue to invest in New World, to showcase this more than any other aspect.
That’s silly. Some advertisement. Advertising something that will make them zero dollars, is real big brained. New World is a huge project, why use an engine not suited for large team projects. Hang on, I am getting to much done. Let me shoot my other foot real quick. OK! Where were we? Oh right, saving a few bucks while tossing an entire project in the garbage out of pride.
Oh yeah, I didn’t even think about that. I remember when DX12 came out it completely changed gaming because of that fact and super quad cores were phased out due to lack of string processing efficiency when the availability was expanded to twice as many core usage in most games.
I’m not sure about that. Lumberyard is now called Open3D.
It doesn’t cost anything.
The code is open source. Means, everyone can use it, rename it and give it another name. An Indidev could use open3d, give it a name and no one would even know (well besides the people working on it), that they used lumberyard/open3d.
You can even see that ingame in NW (starting screen), where they called it azoth engine.
Also, AGS still has a dedicated team inhouse working on the engine. As a customer I highly prefer that over using some 3rd party engine.
I also dont quite understand, where the general consensus comes from, that lumberyard is bad (not saying you think that btw).
The game was originally meant to be a survival game.
A simple, in our mind, system like changing the location of a questgiver according to your quest progression was simply not implemented at launch. Why should it? Originally it was never meant to have something like that.
But we can observe that they slowly but surely are implementing the tools they need.
Newer quests have the ability to change the questgivers location.
They can place roaming enemies. Events like the thorpe one in great cleave. Instanced wars. These are all examples of AGS working on the tools they need to make an MMORPG. The game was simply released to early.
