Just because malware doesnāt detect anything doesnāt mean it isnāt there. That or you screwed up your own machine. Either way you did something stupid. Steam doesnāt care about you, no company does.

Remember when you could walk to the local āgame storeā and buy a game on floppy disk and take it home and you didnāt need the internet or even a modem and the game was final, never any updates, no matter what was wrong with it? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Remember when a 360 kilobyte floppy disk could hold a whole game? No fancy 3d graphics, no fancy sampled audio, no nothing, just some beeps and pixels? Canāt we go back to that? And printed manuals? Why do we need this fancy webpage nonsense, not everyone wants to be an internet nerd. You see these credits with hundreds of people who worked on a game, and itās like, I donāt need all that. All I need is one coder in a garage with a breadboard prototype system, 4 colors, and as many pixels on a screen as one letter has on one of these stupid ā4kā monitors.
Damn yeah thatās unfortunate, and for you to still get hacked is crazy. I remember my ATM was hacked and it was used at Panda Express in Florida like 5x.
Standalone launcher, ālaunch serviceā, yeah the only difference is what youāre conveying as a ālaunch serviceā is a company that doesnāt offer other games or some kind of a store. UPlay, Origin, etc and all of the other ālaunchersā all donāt adhere to that. Iām not talking about some indie game with itās own launcher; thatās not what weāre talking about. No, theyāre all mostly the same - take Smite for example. NCSoft has a launcher, that is executed via clicking āPlayā in Steam. You still need to have separate login credentials, which is an utter pain in the arse. So yes, the two terms are being used colloquially, yet everyone here knows what weāre talking about.
I have yet to play a game with a separate launcher that I can appreciate for what it is outside of the Battlestate Games launcher for Escape from Tarkov. RARELY does a game have a launcher that doesnāt either attempt to sell you another one of their games, or has a store for RMT.
If I had something in my computer which makes desktop icons redirect to chinese google, Iād do nothing with that computer until Iāve dealt with it or found someone else who have dealt with it. But maybe it is just my priorities.
It happened right after a Steam update. Not long ago, Steam pushed an update that made it not
possible to connect to this game for many people. I am hoping this is the same issue. Iāll go thru the registry with a fine tooth comb and download some other progs that are good at sniffing. Wish me luck.

Thereās no need for a fucking ālauncherā to begin with. A simple desktop shortcut to the local game .exe if all thatās needed! Steam is fucking trash!

Umm Windows can detect when it needs an update and it does itās thing. And it hasnāt had a launcher sinceā¦when did they stop requiring dos? Windows95? You donāt need a fucking launcher to do updates!
Ok, so hereās the other thing: this computer goes nowhere. I only use it to game and order. So, I have gone to Steam, New World, New World forums, Amazon shopping, Target shopping, TurboTax online, and my personal emails, and browsed my timeline on FB. I have gone nowhere else. In-game, I did hover over the sausages, I sent a few personal messages to gold sellers telling them I hope they have personal problems with their āpee-peeā before blocking them, and one gold-seller sent me a personal message out of the blue that I did not respond to and just blocked them. So which one of these things hacked me?
Windows has Windows Update and associated service running. (Disable that and you do not get updated. Except when Microsoft uses a backdoor to force their update anyway.) You need only convince Microsoft to acquire New World and integrate it in Windows 11 OS as part of the ever increasing shovelware bloat and it will be automatically updated for you without a launcher.

The difference between steam launcher any any other launcher is that steam launcher rarely ever goes down, and when it does, their team is more dedicated to making sure it goes back up as fast as possible. This is basically all steam does, so theyāre better prepared for it rather than the company making their own. If their own launcher goes down, how fast do you think they can get it back up vs someone whose company model is basically only dealing with game launching?
