Threat Generation + Tanking

ah yes…tanks feeling like they need to do dmg instead of actually tanking and using their shield makes perfect sense to me…sorry for you healers out there that have to actually heal and use heavy attcks on allies to remove debuffs and lose dmg on enemies and use heal ablities and lose dmg…im sorry man but if you want to tank then tank if you want to dps (which it sounds like you want to do) then dps. Like this is a pointless complaint i am lvl 56 been in tons of groups and unless im doing a super low lvldungeon with a low lvl tank threat is never an issue. There are not even dps meters im going to tell you no one cares how much dmg your doing as a tank if im getting hit as a dps that is when im going to start caring.

Blocking does generate threat

This. As soon as you see mobs I almost always see a Life staff or a staff orb go flying in and mobs come rushing at the group. Its so easy to tell people who have limited MMO experience that are playing this game because Ive had so many pulls turn into a complete cluster **** because people just dive into mobs like its the random trash mobs they zerg into out in the world.

What I cant stand about tanking is how group members will force push you into a wall and body block you into a boss and they dont seem to understand moving and mob positioning is how tanking works. the just run at things bashing away and its infuriating.

I just did depths and between all the dungeons ive done so far, I feel like tanking works fine. I use S&S/Hatchet and rarely lose threat. Defiant stance is my main AOE taunt, and when im not blocking or tauting, I just run around and smack everything to keep threat on me. The 1 or 2 stray mobs that gets away is generally ok and the party can handle it. If I need to, then I can target a taunt with shield bash. If I get in a bad situation, then I always keep my hatchet on standby with beserk for a backup AOE taunt.

My biggest issue is trying to get to a mob while fighting with 4 melee and not being able to get through my party members.
This leads to my skills missing the target and me being unable to even hit the mobs as I can’t push through my teammates.
Maybe increase hit range and make more skills radius instead of frontal cone.

I’m not a tank, I have no skills in that all. I have healed in EVERY MMO i played but my 5 cent is that aggro is skewed. I get insane amounts of threat as a healer and it just doesn’t seem viable. I think that for pve content there has to be some more threat generating functions cause it’s a bit painful for both the healer and the tank as it is.

I actually LOVE the threat generation of this game. It makes logical sense to focus the casters and the healers so your tanks actually need to actively do things to keep aggro off you and your dps need to learn to stop hitting the boss, and hit the trash that’s killing your healer if that situation arises.

I play D&D and if you see an enemy tossing heals, that is the one you need to handle first. It’s just common sense and seeing that in the AI code is absolutely wonderful.

I tank with Sword and Shield and I think Threat generation is way too low. we shouldn’t be competing this much with dps.

I doubt that, I could be on the complete other side of the room and have a dps activate the monster’s battle mode and it would just rush at me.

Then again my monk hair, mutton chops and oldman face just make me so damn threatening

I was under the clear impression that blocking does generate A LOT of hate as well. I mean I tried to just “taunt” a group of mob and then just block with my shield just to see what will happen…and mobs NEVER went away. I basically never hit them with anything, I was just blocking and waiting.

Group was maybe low dps (not sure but maybe ?) so you may have to hit and use some skills / perks to maintain agro on you but clearly, very obviously, blocking does generate hate.

Yall arguing whether tanks need a carnelian to aggro and the answer is like, good mmos, it depends. S&S has increased threat and block does generate threats.

One of the comments mentioned that to be a tank you need carnelian which sucks cause other roles don’t need gems. Untrue, at all. Carnelians works both ways people. It will reduce the threat if in armor. I got annoyed at our healer early game cause he fires first and generates threat so much so I made him wear 3 flawed carnelians in the armor, guess what? fixed.

Some DPS like int-based DPS need the elemental gems for their secondary. Like a good team-based game, dungeons need to be coordinated. There’s a quest that gives a great rare sword item at lvl 40, it sucks that it doesn’t have gem slot, but I can still tank the depths boss cause I got hammer and my cd management is great. I also have a few poeple who I play with that does equip carnelian on armor even if its just one or two (you can also put it in earrings and necklace).

All I’m saying, the game has so many bugs and other problems (like swimming, I mean, you walk under water), that this isn’t an issue to me at all. Its a great feature

Anything that adds to player toxicity in an already often toxic community I would have to say no thank you to.

HOWEVER…

If someone wants to see their own dps, to be able to improve and figure out their best rotations and responses to situations. That I could get behind.

Having a threat meter so that dps can see when they might need to back off a little on the boss for a sec or 2, yeah fine.

Just please, no parsing party numbers as this just encourages elitism and parse wars and picking even more on noobs.

Get them to wear carnelian on armor. It works both ways. If you are a DPS and are getting too much aggro even when the tank is trying their best, wear one. Guess what Dps people? 5 armors and 2 accessories are equipable with gems, if you ain’t got no space for even one anti-threat skill you better learn how to take hits. If you complain, then screw you cause I can only put carnelian that generates threat on a weapon.

I’m a pure tank. If I see someone complain that they’re getting attacked by one archer and Im getting mauled by 5, I’ll tell em to get carnelian or learn how to deal with it or if not Ill just let the mob fuk em up. S&S taunt cd is HELLA long, its intended that dps and healers get carnelian.

Can’t find the answer to this, but if you slot a carnelian gem in the shield does it enable taunts? If so, does it stack if you place another carnelian gem in the sword? Would you have 600% threat generation?

How many shields have you found with gem slots? I don’t ever recall seeing a gem slot on a shield.

I think tanking is just fine the way it is. I have never had a problem tanking in expeditions unless someone pulls an add before I do and then runs away from me. If they run the add to me, it's easy to pick up. Once I have mobs, they never leave. I have tanked as a str/con build, but I now tank as an int/con build. Tanking is not tied to any stat (except con to a particular point so you don't die). Tanking is tied to blocking. This makes it so you are able to tank without using a carnelian gem, however, it is much more difficult and I don't encourage people without a group that knows what they're doing.

With a str/con build, if you are having trouble keeping aggro on adds do two things: 1) Use reverse stab. The last perk on reverse stab (tactician) makes it so that every mob you hit with backstab decreases all sword cooldowns, but this also works for defiant stance, your aoe taunt, making it usable much more often. If you are able to hit four mobs with this skill, it resets the cd and you can use the taunt right after the last one ends. It's very good. 2) I recommend using a hatchet with a carnelian gem as your second weapon. Berserk is an aoe taunt that actually lasts longer than defiant stance by 2 seconds. That's huge!! This gives you two aoe taunts, and one single target taunt between the two weapons which is more than you should ever need. Then make sure to pick up defy death, and it will actually give the healer extra time to heal you before you die should you get behind.

If you happen to want to try an int/con build blocking and stamina become even more important. Make sure to take the perk that lowers stamina damage taken when you block and the perk that grants you stamina when you use shield bash or shield rush. This helps to refill stamina you lose while blocking. If you're good with just the sns for taunts, you can use the firestaff which can do a serious amount of damage while you tank. For bosses or seriously hard hitting mobs, I suggest using the ice gauntlet. Make sure you take blocking stamina perk, as it converts mana to stamina while blocking with the gauntlet allowing you to recharge your stamina so you can swap back to sns with a full bar.

These are just little tips that might help. I actually got the int/con build from a youtube video by Tristan Pope at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZwdtL9FdLE

First time I played a tank character was recently in the Public Test Realm, which explains the lack of information or discussion I could find on the topic. In the PTR there are shields with gem slots, and when the gem is slotted it states the same as being slotted into a weapon - i.e. it enables taunt and increases hate generation by 300%.

So I guess my question is more intention / PTR related - will having 2 gems (one in shield, one in sword) make my threat generation hit 600% more?

It just needs to be on the sword/any weapon, u can put what ever u wish in the shield.
