Trees: spawn vs growth

Why do trees spawn instead of grow?
When you chop a massive tree down, my theory is that the tree should regrow as a tiny sapling and, if left alone, would eventually (time frame realistically TBD) grown into a big old tree and then if left too long would die, fall down, be a dead tree and a new sapling would grow in its place.
One: it might be an economy fix. Make T2+ wood rarer while waiting for the trees to grow
Two: The folks that own territory would be wise to practice some kind of conservation, protecting saplings from getting cut down to allow for old growth and more valuable aged wood…somehow.
Three: it would be cool.

That’s my thought. I’m done.
