What's a REAL tank build?

carnelian on gear increases threat instead of reducing it like it says as a healer i learnt this the hard way that tooltip is incorrect.

You do realize non arpg games - dodge is a stat right?

Here you have skill operating the dodge. The better tank you are - skill wise less con and armor you need. The str ove con tanks are avoiding avoidable damage and are rewarded with ability to contribute damage.

Tank build-now I’m 90% PVE.

I do the about 75% constitution/25% strength in my base build
200 points to set into the base.
Mine is 176 con and 24 strength.
Thats base.
Now we build up everything with gear/jewelry
Level 60.

Min 150 strength, i must do enough damage to keep aggro, and time my taunts as well.
Sword & Shield:
Reverse stab, shield bash, defiant stance. And for the party- i took defensive formation at the end skill tree-giving the dps bonus of damage reduction 30% while I hold up my blocking shield.

Constitution 250 and above.

Tanks differ.
I keep a hard eye on resistance. Physical and Elemental.

I have perks in armor/jewelry that are refreshing, more maximum health, invigorated, hated, resilient, lifestealing (shield and sword and secondary weapon),contagious reverse stab to name some i have.

I slap in different pristine gems in my armor gear for different situations/foes, again building up resistance.

Then the consumed temporaries:
potions, con/strength/health food, and lets not forget honing stones and powerful incense bonuses.

Tanks differ. Some want to do more damage, moving fast dodge, etc.
I call myself a lazy tank.
I hit slap hard enough for attention aggro, then do my best to hold it for everyone else to do all the work of taking the mob down.

I am leveling my main, which used to be my alt, as a tank. Currently almost to level 49.

Everything into con do far.

Primarily I use SnB + hatchet, when it gets old i goof off with SnB + spear…

Where can i find some good info or guides or….

You only have two dodges, maximum three. Most attacks should not be dodged, just blocked and in some cases received. That’s why you need to be someone trustworthy, not a pain in the ass for the Healer…

And that’s not a tank, it’s a Bruiser (or “Off Tank”, some also call it)

The problem is that few tanks dont want to do their real job and want to do mediocre damage while barely surviving.

Nobody would call it that. An off-tank is a separate roll, and not currently required in any NW content.

A tank’s job is to survive and hold aggro. If you can do that just as effectively at lower HP (which you can in this game) you also get to provide more damage. It’s not a difficult concept.

i hope i never hear that term again lol

Bingo! That’s my contention about a lot of tanks in NW. On my server (and I am only speaking for MY server) all you see is requests for tanks. Because no one wants to play them as needed for the higher level mutations. That’s great for me but the only problem I have is that those people spamming for tanks are usually so bad and have crappy dps, will wreck themselves then blame the tank and/or healer! Can’t win for losing.

But seriously, off-topic, I am seeing the decline of Tanks in numbers. In fact, I’d say there is more demand for tanks than the usual healer. NW needs to give tanks the ability to switch things up. S&B is fun, but what about Shield and hatchet or a greatsword that offers some type of blocking? We can TRY and diversify ourselves, but I don’t think the game actually allows us that freedom (hence this discussion). Would love to see a diversity of tank builds, but I do not believe based on my own experience and that of others, that the game mechanics allow for it.

Yea I mostly agree. My points in this thread have been about CON exclusively, for some reason that has been misinterpreted as using other passives or weapons, but SS is absolutely required to tank effectively. Offhand allows for some flexibility. I think they wanted to have other weapons be viable as mainhand like IG because of the block passive that consumes mana - that could be cool - it just doesn’t work that well. Rapier could almost work but I think the evasion playstyle can be detrimental to groups since you will most likely end up moving mobs around too much. I really hope they add more options, but until then sticking to SS.

And thats why they need a good Tank, no someone who cant survive because want to make damage too. Our work is techinally carry our team.

Really no matters if dps have big oe medium damage, we can hold on alife while they can make THEIR job.

I guess Greatsword gonna be a DEX weapon. For STR we have GreatAxe (Slash).

If you can keep your 250 - 300 CONS and keep your Sword and Shield, you can use your 200 - 150 points and be a STR Tank with a SECUNDARY like GA or Hammer, a DEX Tank with Spear or Rapier, A Paladin with FOC and LS, or a Vampire Tank with your INT and Void Gauntlet (Really strong build).

I just use my Hatchet for Rend, Disease and Weaken. Obviouslly Berserk when is needed.

You can be any kind of Tank, just remember: Damage is not our work. Our work is mitigate it. JUST DO IT.

Edit: To clarify that S&S will always be our main weapon and that you can make your build by adding other weapons as secondary.

I hear Rapier tank was OP with all the evades, its just a rogue that dodges everything.
the more iframes the better the tank, along with doing crazy damage its OP

The problem is it has no other utility for the team, no aoe, and mistakes are more heavily punished. Plus evade is getting heavily nerfed next patch. I’d be entertained to see someone pull it off but not going to try it myself ^^

Edited: forgot riposte is a taunt :man_shrugging:. CD also getting nerfed on this though.

Which is good because I do not use it. I need to know what would be the best way to reduce my own threat. I think I just need to find a Tank that knows how to hold aggro tbh.

I pulled a M1 Tank and taught him what to do. We cleared M5-M7 Last night.
Getting that 1,500 Umbral Shards felt great.

You have to eat some. You cant eat back to back. You need to dodge some attacks that would break stamina and stun you. Its all skill and awareness. Standing still holding block is not tanking in an arpg.

Is hard, but you need to read all thread to give a right opinion.

i come back to say VG is so broken shield/vg is the best build for tank, by far. VG gives so much sustain its insane. Self heals, team buffs, enemy debufs, cc… 100 int, 50 cnc, 300 const and you are an unkillable god.

Bruiser…

50 cnc?

For the heals and mana recovery

Hello! Recently got my Grand Time Poobah achievement for 760hours played. I main tank. I don’t get much into PvP but for PvP, I like to be around 220/220 str/con. For weapons I usually am using GAxe/WHammer. Or SnS/Hatchet, whatever teamcomps I see. I am usually running with a healer and am very grateful for it. Full heavy Voidbent.
For PvE I am SnS and whatever weapon does more dmg. ie: GAxe with Angry Earth bane for Gen, WHammer with Ancient bane for Laz.
I am at 603gs as tank with a str/con of about 180/280 (str food). Still full heavy Voidbent. HP sits around 14.5-16k depending on Mutation level/Regular expedition. M4 is the highest I’ve ran with DPS that avg 618gs. It is VERY hard to me to keep aggro if I’m not attacking, but for those mutations at 603gs I take big dmg haha. So it’s necessary for me to be mobile. It can be challenging.
Regular expeditions are much easier to hold aggro at this point. I switch up my armor to a more str build gs597 give or take, but keep my Carny Weapons the same depending on which expedition. Str/Con at 250/210 something around there haha. I’m having fun with tanking as we all have mechanics we need to follow. Learn them. Not everything is tank-n-spank.
