What's a REAL tank build?

I don’t run 50 dex. I personally don’t find it that useful. I currently run crit chance on ring and weapon which provides what feels like a good enough crit rate to consistently proc “keenly x” perks. The other major reason to run 260 is that I can push it to 300 with food if I really want to (even though it’s not necessary in most cases) which gives the godly grit perk.

It really is. At times, I can almost spam Defiant Stance.

Lol appreciate the sarcasm back!!

I hope they add much harder PvE content which may require a full or high CON tank. I just don’t think it could be required with the current game mechanics unless they add a boss mechanic that does an unblockable/undodgeable 16k damage to the tank or something JUST to force them to spec it - but that seems lazy. They really need to add better perks to high CON to make doing low damage feel more worth it.

Good info. Really havent gotten to the point where I need to run the 40 Stat food Increase, but will put your build into action when I start running Gen/Laz.

Did you wait until you had 600 WM to run them?

Just an historical note: prior to mmo’s tabletop games like D&D did not have what we would term tanks. There were hearty fighters, paladins, and more, but there was no ability to really taunt and there was no mechanic for aggro like in WoW.

A taunt was made available in the much later 3.5 edition. Even then it was a roll of the die to see if it even worked or not.

Opponents in the form of villains and monsters were directed with the only real AI available that of the Dungeon Master. If a dragon went after your mage your fighter was not going to be able to distract them except through the use of daring and cunning and a lucky roll.

Even more, many classes that would be considered tanks today could instead create a fighter or paladin that focused solely on damage dealing. Healers like clerics were often outfitted in full plate and wielding a melee weapon enhanced by their spiritual powers.

This is not an argument for or against tanks as they are known in mmo’s. It is however a note to remember tanks don’t have to be what you’ve traditionally thought they should.

Perhaps the NW isn’t missing something as much as it’s allowing something to be different.

Thats the point, full con does virtually nothing after 200. The milestones are trash, you only get like 22hp per point you spec into con. So your not gunna survive any long just because you have an extra 2k hp. Str gets grit, and i dont even remember off the top of my head as a tank what we get at 300 con cause its so utterly useless lol

I’m having more fun tanking currently than I have in any other game. My tank build isn’t anything close to what you’d picture. INT+CON essentially playing an old school dodge tank. Primary weapon is Rapier using Flurry(heals a ton), Evade and Riposte. I take very few hits but have 14-15k hp in heavy if and when I do get hit. This was even before the Riposte buff :upside_down_face: – I’d also argue this tanking build adds a ton of DPS (also frees healers up a good bit)

Not only has this been the most fun tanking I’ve had, it gives so many unique pairings. Void Gauntlet has been absolutely godly for my playstyle. Ice Gauntlet is even a fun swap but with INT -CON I can like literally use any combo.

There have been lots of ways to fulfill the role of what is known as a tank by most.

With my buffs up I’m at

180 STR
50 DEX
250 CON

Great Axe Hammer when in PVP
S/S and Hammer for PVE

Important perks I run for my build in PVP-
Mending Execute
Leeching Path of Destiny
Sundering Shockwave
Fortifying Whirlwind
Keen
Lifestealing
Regeneration
Resilient

Important Perks I run in my build in PVE
Sundering Shockwave
Leeching Path of Destiny
Hated
Sturdy
Keen
Divine
Lifestealing
Enchanted
Health
Leeching
Resilient

I can survive anything in the game PVE wise and I hit nearly 9k Mending Executes…

No. I think it’s worth running Gen especially to raise WM. I am currently using Laz to hunt for leg Fury and raise ring WM (current 575).

Also I need to emphasize having 600 GS is absolutely not needed, and I run these stats for the most personal flexibility. I tanked these dungeons perfectly fine at a lower gearscore when I was a fresh 60. I’ve been running them since I hit 60 close to launch and the biggest improvement I’ve noticed is more from knowing all mob and boss mechanics like second nature rather than the stats. If I allow myself to get hit a bunch I will still die - maybe a bit slower but still die. For example, if I let all the crawlers on the second door pull in Laz hit me, I will actually just die instantly even at 600 GS.

I’ve really wanted to try this build, seems fun and glad it’s working for you

I used to swear by hatchet for the spammable taunt but honestly I won’t go back from hammer. 20-30% rend. AoE taunt. Extra damge in Laz. Easy armor breaking. Can actually block almost as well as shield. Great self-heals.

Don’t forget that Rend caps at 50% I believe so if anyone else is also applying any kind of rend, you could potentially get away with mixing it up.

SNS and Hatchet.

200 con minimum, rest into strength because you need to do damage to draw aggro.

SNS skills should be either:

  1. Reverse Stab, Shield Bash and Defiant Stance. The reasoning on this is that it is easy to taunt many mobs at once and therefore, easy to hit multiple mobs with reverse stab and therefore achieve huge cooldown reduction on shield bash and defiant stance which are both taunts, bash stuns and defiant stance is damage reduction and self-heal.

  2. Shield Rush, Bash and Defiant Stance. Some tanks are of the opinion that if you have a sword with refreshing move, this is sufficient cooldown reduction. With this build, you take the perk that gives 15 stamina on hitting an enemy with shield rush or bash.

I personally prefer build 1 and feel like I get better cooldown reduction but both are equally viable.

Hatchet is hands down the best tanking secondary in the game. It has a taunt on Berserk (an AOE taunt similar to defiant stance, which is instant unlike DS) and an ultimate that literally stops you from dying once every 60 seconds, I believe it is. If things are getting hairy, you can switch to your hatchet, not die, chug your health pot and regen pot and your healer has a chance to heal you.

For a pure solo build while levelling, a lifestaff is a great secondary even with the heavy armour nerfs. It’s viable end-game too and you’d want a split of something like 100 str, 150 focus, 160 con (so you can reach 200 con with food).

Void Gauntlet is another honourable mention is tanking is essentially a stamina management mini game and the oblivion and essence rupture skills grant you stamina, therefore, you can block more without your guard being broken. The good thing here is that you don’t need any attribute investment to benefit from oblivion and essence rupture. The only reason VG isn’t “the best” secondary, is if you’re running group content, you will likely have a healer and top tier healers are using the VG as their secondary anyway.

My thought was more because orbs aren’t cheap and If I go in there with 600 GS can possibly come out with better gear and better value for my orb.

But I get your point about mechanics.

I tend to group mobs to kill them and one thing I notice is that their body push can corner you and even PUSH YOU UP A WALL up to a meter high and keep your character in a constant state of falling, which makes you unable to attack or do any action to survive.

Yea that’s what I meant by “juggling”. It’s hilarious but also really annoying. Another bad one is getting pushed into a wall and glitching into said wall which drops aggro.

Maybe, but if you can get an orb <1k you actually make your money back in just boss gold drops. It’s definitely better to just get in and try it out. You will get good WM farm if you do it consistently.

Well, some amazing replies here.

Nobody wants a refund or is quitting the game? It makes this topic so off-topic, I feel. HAHAHA

Yep, right now, the tank is the one that can be the most DPS and threat. Which is a barbarian usually, or a heavy fighter in heavy gear. Squishy.

And yes, right now in NW, aggro and dodging is what tank can do. But that’s far from the typical “You shall not pass” attitude.

BUT! Eh, what’s important is that you love to play, that’s the bottom line.

I loved SNS for a hot minute early on but the idea of constantly being pushed around even in full heavy + tower shield was so dumb to me. I think the first time I hated SNS was my first run through Depths.
