And noone will make combat system like NW for long time. You need tons of computing power to do it couse everything has to be calculated on server side. There are just few companies on entire world that have resources to do it and are nearby gaming industry.
Amazon wanted to do survival game and by mistake they did mmo with combat system noone date to do couse its so hard to make it happens on larage scale with todays technology.
the foundation for new world is existent. just like Assassins Creed added on many features to side projects like Far Cry or Fallout 3 and New Vegas got its roots from oblivion, new world will most definitely be a foundation that contributes to another title but much like Julezer the most important thing for any combat is the fluidity its that 0.25 second break in between animations that make things feel a bit chunky. luckly that can be fixed with proper animation mapping and time windows where animations can be seamlessly stringed together at the cost of animation responsiveness however having finished animations finish with a movement that simply glide on the same pathing as other animations can mean that the animation can be interrupted and still not feel like your character is clearly snapping into another animation. though animations can be sped up or have frames cut to cheat the speed up process and games like black desert online do cut animations to make the combat feel fast and snappy but compensate with that by blasting colours and light all over the screen to obscure the players perception on such short cuts. not saying that’s necessarily bad at least the frame cutting animations if done with moderation but I tend to avoid such colour flashing game-play because that triggers the dopamine receptors which clouds the judgment on whether the game is fun or am I just being drugged into thinking so.
okay so I have taken a look at it and yeah thats an fps/ 3rd person perspective and while things look great in fps Im seeing a lot of slop in mordhau’s third person perspective combat. for you my friend I would recommend dying light and dying light 2 and chronicles of riddick if you have an original xbox or xbox 360. but while hits in fps view is very accurate the third person view’s point of contact is very sloppy. thats a system where you hit what you hit and move on from that point. its combat that is very much in the moment. what new world is, is plan your current position, know any objects that might help you or hinder you, control your opponents position and make sure you are timing your cool downs properly and occasionally keep track of your 35 minute buffs.
Well combat system NW has is very unique in mmos world. Can’t be replicated - except few companies on world. Couse of resources needed to keep game up and running.
Also survival part of game is still very much in NW core. Devs should stop trying to do what other mmos do and build up on NW strongest and most unique elemenets: combat and raw/brutal world around.
Why NW has best gathering system? Couse it wasn’t designed for mmo. And this is the path they should follow. Desgin systems for survival game and adapt them to work in mmorpg. It would make NW most unique mmo in last 20 years or so.
Devs should not listen playerbase than is “we need mounts, every mmo has mounts!” - this guys are jumping from game to game. Not worth to listen. Build own playerbase by building unique mmo that has best combat system we ever had in mmo.
ye 3rd person look sloppy there, allmost nobody use it for more than quick lookaround. What i meant is not how it looks, but how complex, and how much skill gap this complexity creates. You can literally move every bone in your body. If you look up/down your charachter will bend over and you can dodge the swing in this way. Blocking work only for 0.25ms. If you click it too fast your done. You can slow down your swings, feint your swings, fasten your swings, and move them around during animation to go around or trick enemy block. You have 8 different type of attacks that you should bind for different buttons to stay competitive. Left upper swing, right up swing, left swing, right swing, left downswing, right downswing, thrust attack and a kick (KICK IS VERY IMPORTANT!). 1000h is not enaugh to master this system.
one day we will all be playing full body haptic feedback vr mmo’s and that system your talking about will undoubtedly have a cult following. but having a system like that for an mmo where there is more than 2 enemies in front of you all with very acute combat mechanics like that would probably burn a server room to a neat little pile of charred wires and molten server cases when you consider that everyone on the server could be putting just as much computation load X server population.
no doubt that new world’s combat system is unique but its combat pace is undoubtedly akin to playing a cheap fighting game where pauses between animations have no flow (and action is slow in my eyes). but I just want to see how the rest of the game sees this topic without anyone coaxing anyone’s opinion. maybe this topic becomes part of their quarterly surveys because they can cater to the vast majority and which is probably the better way to go about game design as opposed to the most forum posts which can be copy and pasted to falsify the overall player base opinion.
Ofs its far away from perfect. Im just saying that this is sth they should build on. You wont get better story telling than FF14 or better pve than GW2 or WOW.
You did not mention this is about mmorpg fight system, so i brought the best one i know here. Nothing suprising, as this game core is people fighting with swords in invasion modes (UP TO 50v50 like new world btw and its fine serverwise. even tickrate is at least 64. with some custom community servers having it bumped to 128.) abd ranked dueling system. There is nothing else but PVP medival sword fighting in this game. And the system is MOST advanced among all of these types of games. And they usually tend to have best combat around. Chivalrly is another example, but way more casual because much less complex system. You cant drag, only accels which are also easier to do than mordhau, infinite blocking, ez riposte with build in block and no downswings made it so. Still way more complex than anything posted there. xd
What you brought there in the original post looks like single player rpg combat systems. Poor and casual. first one looks exactly like a batman game i was playin 10 years ago. I prefere new world combat all over.
yeah the forum post was intended to be focused on combat pacing this can also be inferred by each video being explained as slow medium or fast paced. but if you just read the title, I can see how someone could come to that conclusion. combat complexity wasn’t really supposed to be part of this topic of discussion. I’m also not a huge fan of 0.25 second block windows as opposed to indefinite blocks that reduce damage or apply damage to the shield or weapons while0.25 second parrying deflects the enemy attack and forces them into moving the weapon away to put the player into a disadvantage. but again I’m taking the bait and helping derail the topic so I’m gonna try to pull it back to the main focus.
So as the pacing go, i like all of them equally. So martial arts/slasher games basically have to use the first one, and so tactical medival melee weapon dueling that wants to be ralistic have to be more flexible there. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow and getting to know your opponent.
I really reccomend you to try mordhau if you havent. It has ultra high entry level tho. You will be crushed almost 100-0 for the first 100h or so. But you will see why i am praising this combat system so bad. It is REALLY the most skill demanding melee combat ever. I can literally say that the skill gap between top players and avarage players is same if not even higher than league of legends or counter strike. 0 mercy for mistakes. Huge reward for good fighting sense.
Whenever you die, you exactly know what you did wrong and what you should have done instead. you can only blame yourself. (despite rare occasions when you get hit from balista dude, but its not even that much annoying xd)
