White-knighting a video game because “it’s a great foundation for a good game” is exactly why developers continue releasing unfinished products

Wait, let’s add another bit from Amazon’s own web site:
“Following the Technical Alpha, we have been working hard, translating walls of text, squashing bugs, spending long hours in the recording studio, and preparing the server infrastructure behind the scenes.”

Read the title and thought to myself, “Bet there’s a wall of text behind this link”
Lo and behold

That is NOT far more than publishers do you even mentioned in your post how its NOT more than.

Just face it you had no idea ASG was just a publisher of Lost Ark a game that released in 2018. Its ok, you didn’t know its not that big of a deal.

You’re just wrong, dude. Publishers do not record voiceovers and facial animations, design in-game art, or fix bugs. In most cases they don’t even have access to the source code. That’s a fact of game development, not a debatable point.

Sony, EA, and Microsoft do get involved in those things, but that’s because they’re not true “publishers”, they actually own a lot of the studios and have leverage.

It’s called a metaphor. It’s not meant to be a direct comparison. A metaphor is a resemblance that is not literally applicable.

No? Thats not what OP means at all.

For instance i do enjoy games that have low quality on some aspects. Kenshi is a really good game which lacked polishng for years, until it eventually became a proper product. Yet i still love it, and did love it years ago too. But saying that its a perfect game or that it doesn’t deserve criticism for being a buggy mess at many times (not so much now) is simply disingenuous.

It’s called a “really BAD metaphor.”

That’s the thing. I’m not talking about minimal issues. That is to be expected with any new release. I’m talking about issues that have absolutely no excuse for being present, considering the amount of examples developers have to draw from these days. Yes, bugs will always accompany new releases, but that can’t be a justification for blatant obstacles that past developers have overcome through trial. All I’m saying is that it seems AGS didn’t use those victories to their advantage when they developed New World.

OP, most people underestimate the insidious power of cognitive dissonance.

Not to mention the sunk cost fallacy.

It’s a very delicious sounding metaphor

I don’t think I labeled anyone at all. Is it not true? Just because I like something doesn’t mean it is of good quality. The quality of a product is not determined by subjective viewpoints. It’s determined by its makeup. Put a fake diamond and a real diamond next to each other and ask 100 people to decide which one they like more. Say 51 of those people decide they like the fake diamond more. Does that automatically make the fake diamond higher quality than the real? Your defensiveness makes it sound like you are beginning to second-guess your own viewpoint on the game, but you are still holding out hope that things will change.

You could have saved yourself a lot of time by saying “Stop liking what I don’t like!”

Yeah there are problems but I have played a ton of hours. The question you need to ask yourself is “did you get $40 worth of entertainment?”.

I won’t presume to speak for anyone else, but I personally feel that I have. If you don’t feel that you have I am not going to tell you you should. Why do you feel you have the authority to tell others they are wrong for enjoying the game?

Is that really what I said though?

I mean if I’m a white knight for wanting an MMO to do well and grow/learn from its mistakes, and not instantly drag it down when something stops working. Where’s my cape and sword?

The problem is people are comparing an MMO launch to single-player/multi-player games when MMOs are a different kind of beast altogether and will break, A LOT. Every MMO to date has done so.

There’s a reason we had such a big MMO drought. They’re not easy to make and require so much time and effort no one wanted to waste money on them.

Is the game got a good base? imho, yes
Does it need work? Jesus lord of Nazareth it does. I mean it REALLY needs work. (I’ve yet to see anyone deny this)

but as someone who has played MMOs all their life, I know that there is no way in hell an MMO is ever going to launch complete/bug-free unless they leave it in development for years. Star Citizen is trying to do this, but development now is 10 years or so and no sign of it launching? But I guarantee you SC will have a bad launch.

I’m all for calling out BS in games and have actively done so, MTX, Lootboxes, incomplete £60+ games, but there are some cases that have valid reasons and IMHO New World is one of them.

I mean for one, the games £35 no sub fee. Cyberpunk was £50. Fifa 2022 is £50 with unlimited MTX

Instead of labeling anyone who has anything positive to say about the game as a “white knight” why don’t you do exactly what you’re saying they should do: pay attention to their comments individually.

This “us vs. them” crap is ridiculous and needs to stop.

If that’s how you think and you’re ideologically bound to your commitment, take some time off of what you consider “your life” and re-center.

Absolutely not. That’s a completely subjective thing, you’re trying to shift the goalpost there because you know it’s impossible to argue it objectively and you can make up stuff all day.

The real question is: Did I get what was advertised? And the answer to that is a resounding NO. Significant portions of the game that were advertised, documented, demoed, and even played in alpha and beta, are disabled or were removed entirely. Other parts are so broken it’s ridiculous. People, including me, bought the game partly for that advertised content, and it’s not there.

My product not unfinished i got a swimming instructor and everything. Should of bought the $60 version

Someone read through this post and take this hypocrites money!

…To ANYONE on this thread posting about game companies releasing unfinished content and how its “white knights” fault…

STOP BUYING GAMES! I bet you wont, you’ll still buy them…and because you do, you’re a part of the so called “problem” you’re speaking of.

I cant believe some of you can’t see how idiotic this all is…

You cant tell me how to rate a game…you understand that? I get to choose to rate a game good or bad…

None of you will stop buying games… none of you. You will continue to buy games, and their dlc’s, and then complain if someone opinion about said games differes from yours.

If any of you had an ounce of actual conviction, you wouldnt buy the games!!! Jesus.

And guess what, I won’t.

  • I won’t buy the next ME game, or anything from Bioware, until I see reviews and gameplay.
  • I won’t buy Starfield on release even though I really want what they’re saying because I don’t trust Bethesda at all.
  • After Epic scuttled and/or destroyed two games I liked, it will be a long time before I get hyped for anything from them.
  • I didn’t buy Monster Hunter Rise after the launch debacle with MHW.

I gave Amazon a chance. Won’t happen again.

But you know, I probably will buy the next TR and AC games at release. And I’m very hyped for Horizon Forbidden West. Because not all developers suck.
