I want to create a female warrior/tank type character, with a Norse-sounding name. This is a character concept I’ve played in several games before, using the same name I intended to here.
“-dottir” is a suffix for female children’s surnames that simply means “daughter”. A girl with a father named “Jon” may have the last name “Jonsdottir”. Other children may inherit the mother’s name. This is required practice in Iceland to this day.
The following names give the result “This name cannot be used”. Note the “Hela Spear-” portion can be changed to anything else normally allowed.
Hela Speardottir
Hela Speardotir
Hela Speardotter
Hela Speardoter
But put an “a” or anything on the end and it’s fine:
Hela Speardottira - OK!
Also note there’s no prohibition on using -son or -sen at the end of a name.
I see countless ridiculous, non-immersive names in the game (I just checked, “xLeetKillerx” is allowed); why are traditional female Norse/Scandinavian name endings banned?
I think they have prohibited as many brand and product names as they can and unfortunately where DOTTIR is also a furniture company the word has likely fallen victim to this same restriction.
Perhaps in this case they should allow it as a suffix as long as it remains lowercase? Either way, +1 from me for trying to get the restriction lifted.
My guess (take with pinch of salt, as I’m not online to test) is it goes further and is actually just the word dot, to protect against all manner of names like:
I was just trying to do the same thing it took me quite a time to figure out it was the -dottir suffix was the problem with the name. I would like to add my vote for the change. And I did shorten it to just -dot and that worked it is the whole dottir that is blocked.
Looks like the name filter needs to be improved. It makes absolutely no sense to prevent someone from using -dottir as a suffix while allowing stuff like using all numbers, etc.
