Why I'm About to Quit Playing: The Math

Do you not understand how arithmetic works? A “player-driven economy” only works if the PLAYERS can MAKE MONEY. If there’s no NEW MONEY coming IN to the economy from activities that GENERATE money, what you have is a deflationary crisis where the price of everything will aysmptotically approach zero because nobody has the cash to BUY anything.

You do not MAKE money on the Trading Post in this game, you only GET money from other players–and only if they can, themselves, MAKE that money faster than they can get the ingredients to craft stuff themselves.

Once they hit the endgame quest nadir, they won’t be making cash any faster than I am. Meaning it will ALWAYS be faster for them to craft their own stuff than to grind out cash to pay someone else to do it.

Meaning that the trading post will be empty except for ultra-rare once-a-month style drops no one can afford unless they play 200 hours a month exclusively spent grinding cash.

I’m 60 and recently purchased my third house. Invasions is one of the best ways I earn money.
I also participate in wars, dungeons, and groups that farm elites for gear score. I’m not a high-level crafter but I do gather and sell resources. I always have plenty of gear drops to salvage for repair parts and enough money to cover expenses.

Town boards are a terrible way to earn money and I think that might be the root of your problem since that is the activity you are basing your earnings and “math” on. I highly recommend participating in the other activities in the game all of which can earn you money and gear to salvage for repair parts.

I can’t do dungeons, because the wear and tear on my gear costs MORE THAN I GET FROM RUNNING THE DUNGEON. Plus, I need to re-spec my stats for tanking which means it costs me 1000 coins before I even START the dungeon.

Someone told me, “Oh, go farm mobs in this area, they drop huge amounts of cash”. So I did. End result of 20 minutes of killing as fast as I could? I LOST 10 coins. I started with 6993 and fully-repaired gear. After salvaging the minimal loot I got and the coin drops I got from killing mobs, I had 6883 coins.

And, no, the daily bonus awards from the first 3 faction quests are NOT enough to keep my house, because my tax is over $1000. Hmm, let’s see, 150 times 5 days, hmm, that’s, wait, 750 coin. Which means I still need to make 250 coin JUST TO PAY THE TAX FOR ONE HOUSE. That’s 5+ hours of additional play just to keep my EXISTING house, much less start saving toward a NEW house.

And, no, it’s not reasonable to expect people to play 40 hours a week exclusively grinding cash and have ONE house to show for it.

Those who don’t have severe money problems because they play the auction house are simply leeching cash off lower-level players who can still get cash at a relatively reasonable rate. When the supply of low-level players dries up (as it inevitably does in any MMO), you will be absolutely broke.

The ONLY reason there is more money coming in to the economy than going out right now is because there are large numbers of still-low-level characters doing money-generating stuff. Once they level up and the population goes down (as it will, it’s ALREADY dropped by over 50%), the whole game economy is going to crash.

The ONLY solution is to anticipate the problem and fix it BEFORE it becomes a crisis and you lose not just the typical attrition portion of the playerbase but the ENTIRE playerbase because nobody can afford to upkeep their characters.

I was rocking 300 int & I slapped an arcane dmg gem in rapier / mace / hachet & great axe (this made 40% of the dmg scale off my int). I was able to do decent dmg & get all of those weapons to 20 just farming elite zones (where with a decent group you should be making far more money than repairs will cost you)

as far as gold income goes, If you can hold out for outpost rush, it’s 300-400g a game & you don’t take repair dmg inside the activity. I think this will be the best source of raw gold for most casual end game players

That being said, I wouldn’t look at trading items to players for gold as a bad thing. Many people will happily pay for upgrades & materials. I am very happy that I can buy items for my coins through the auction system

Why would you need to respec tinievek up new weapons. You don’t really need max efficiency to level up weapons on PvE content …
Level two weapons at once one within spec and outside . One hit splits xp

@PsychoBlonde
I’ve been able to meet my rent in about 1 hour of work per 5 days. You can send me a private message if you’d like to talk, and I’m happy to share.

If you can’t see that you have time and access to things that most players don’t have, I can’t convince you of anything.

The devs have stated they already know money generation at 60 is not good. My guess is they have data right now that would meet their criteria for taking action, but they need to wait until outpost rush is re-enabled to know if that alone will resolve the issue or if they will need to take additional actions.

I vote for “additional actions.” Forcing everyone into Outpost Rush just to make coin to survive is not a good strategy. Players in an MMO should have “options.”

Not everyone needs to do Outpost Rush. There just needs to be enough gold generation for players to spend money on leveling up crafting (i.e. you can sell mats to them) or buying from crafters (i.e. you craft and can finally sell high enough for profit).

I do not believe the devs intend for ppl to make money doing every conceivable activity they might want to do as that very likely would result in huge inflation.

It isn’t cut gems that are worth anything, other than Carnelians, Diamonds, and Onyx, it’s the jewelry you craft with said stones.

Start crafting top of the line (focused attributes- Strength, dex, foc, int, con) amulets, rings and earrings with orichalcum and azoth, and they will sell pretty easily I find. At least on my server, people are buying +20 attributes, with a decent luck perk or something on them.

Why would I tell you my server and invite competition?

Lol, well it costs me nothing to ask  And yes, if I had jewel crafting higher I could make money that way. I’m only at 115 or so now though as I have focused on getting my gathering/refining up to get all the high tier mats myself. I also got 200 Arcana before realizing that was pointless (for now).

I could, technically though, get void ore on my next ori node and that would be worth like 10k. Personally I am able to make ends meet.

An invasion takes less than an hour. If all I did was 5 invasions a week (less than 5 hours) I could still pay the taxes on all three of my houses. If you don’t have 5 hours a week to play and still expect to own 3 houses and experience end-game content then I don’t know what to tell you.

so you literally do some shit where even level 8 can do. Cool content to be proud of.

actually its not 50 coins, its 10 times whatever the quest would normally give.

this means as a level 60, you can get 110-170 gold per quest per day, fairly easily.

the elite zone quests pay more, and if you use levels 50ish gear they are soloable

they very poorly messaged this daily bonus.

taking off your good gear is a bad idea, because most of your power comes from gearing. Also broken gear retains its damage and defense, so flint weapons are never a good option

you’d be better off using cheap greens with a 480+ GS. Also, doing this you’ll get drops worth more per salvage. Hopefully they fix repair kits charging gold, so making new cheap gear isn’t the only option for those who chase death.

Though your playstyle may not make tons of cash, others do, so selling items won’t dry out. The SM zerg chest opening generates a lot of gold from salvage. Others run dungeons, do wars,

Also you can assist low level dungeons on easy mode with little to no death. You don’t have to be a tank, or respec to tank if thats your desire. GS 500 gear adds about 210 Stat points, which is enough to be proficient in anything, for lower level dungeons.

anyhow, the daily faction gives 450-720 per day shouldn’t take long to pay your house bills.

killing level 35-51 enemies with a broken weapon should incur minimal gear damage, allowing all gold and salvage items to be mostly profit.

If Output Rush is the solution to what plagues New World then God help us.

The same instanced PvP that’s available in every other game? Great.

Sorry, bad news. Repair kits still require gold coins to repair stuff.

I am sorry but no … no … and a whole lot more NO in this post.

-Doing 1 Elite run with a large group nets you more than enough to pay for taxes on even a t3 house (thats trashing all the drops cause 520 gear is better than 580 gear). And lets be honest you can buy 580 gear for the AH for 30g-100g each. Also selling reagents or what not.

  • If repair bills are that insane then youre doing something wrong, either group make up, doing content with terrible group make up etc etc.

  • Farming tools are stupid cheap and done correclty the blue and purple gathering variants sell on ANY server dying or not.

  • Takes roughly 2- 2.5 hours to level a weapon up from 1-20, again no big repair bills incurred.

-Exaclty what is the reason for respeccing at all? To farm? kill mobs? makes zero sense (and before i get raged at, I am a healer in light armor. I know the pain of farming)

I am sorry but there is just so much in this post that doesnt make any sense at all. I cap out everyday on repair parts, Azoth, and easily make 3-4k a day on elite runs. That isnt even counting AH sales from gathering, harvesting etc etc.

Faction quest also pay out ALOT more than youre figuring, I do mine in brightwood, i would have to run them and test Windsward maybe? still doesnt add up though.

Also the weapon thing, yeah i am not following this theory at all. Weapons come in all stats and variants, use gems for elemental damage (true T5’s ones are broke t2 still work). Also might be how you stacked attribute points. Possibly look at some guides?

You havent hit anything I have seen for bad econimies. (gold sellers, farm bots, etc etc)

I lied, I follow you on the quests completely dying off and not availabel with bugs breaking quest chains. I apologize I can see your point there.

Totally agree with you, however not so extreme. however i have noticed that the biggest gold generation in the game its the town control tax collection. Its on the hundred of thousando of gold per week (some towns into the millions) thats were the gold is going, but the problem is that is not permeating enough to the economy (through the market, via buying). So instead making that humongous ammounts of gold go to company coffers, should go directly to game (board, quests, open world hunting etc).

Well that is up to whomever is in control of the town and sets the taxes, we have 1 faction that raised the taxes to 15% or something stupid like that.

I just Abandoned house and moved. There is just to many trolling BS that people can do to others that makes it aggravating.

But at the end of the day, there is money to be made, and easily. Buffing/Nerfing the economy is NOT the answer.
