Why is Riposte the ONLY skill in the game with 0 animation?

I like rewarding skilled play and punishing spam play. AGS, and you apparently, obviously are in an opposite camp. If rapier worked as intended, no one would complain about it because it require skill and timing to play. Right now it’s “get our if jail free” and actively rewards BAD play. That’s bad design

Dodging is another problem. The punishment for going into grey is but nearly punishing enough.

Now the desync/performance is a worthwhile conversation… But just being able to be INVINCIBLE with no downside at all (dodging the stun, even if easy, isn’t punishing for the rapier player and still forces the opponent to use stamina).

Obviously the numbers are made up but the design objective, no. Punish players for using riposte badly. I shouldn’t be forced to just stand there while you riposte (and regain stamina and let CDs refresh) without counter play… You should get punished for me predicting your counter.

no counterplay lol? you can litterally get free hits in on a guy that doesn’t trigger his riposte stun by hitting him as soon as it ends which is very easy

by your balance logic people that miss their shockwave should be stunned themselves because they used it badly :joy:

your suggestion is just stupid in every way possible and you saying there is no counter and that they get advantage for getting stam and cd back is also stupid

you not triggering his riposte gives you much more of a advantage than he has because 1. you also get stam and cd back. 2, you can litterally do whatever you want during that like set up another attack or even pop a potion och flask or anything else

Rewarding skill game play. Right.

Like the warhammer? Just roll your face across the keyboard and do a plethora of AOE stuns. So much skill.

What about spears? massive brust dmg. Auto-tracking that would make the oldschool great axe jealous. Rend. Bleed. CC.

Its amazing to me that rapier gets mentioned so much but nobody ever talks about spears. The most busted weapon in the entire game that just gets buffed and buffed every patch despite being completely broken.

Did you know btw. If you use a vault kick right after someone uses riposte. You will get a guaranteed stun from your vault kick because the vault kick animation is sliiightly shorter than the riposte animation. Game is full of little bits of knowledge like that which when you learn them and “git gud” you will never call a rapier OVERPOWERED again. Because it isnt.

Rapier is a noob check. Only the most dogshit players struggle against a rapier. Git gud.

I don’t think you’re following. I don’t think rapier is OP. I think it’s poorly designed. It’s used as a crutch by bad players. This is a fact, and I’m surprised you’re even trying to argue against it. Though since you’re the second one to bring up war hammer in your replies to me, I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised. War hammer might be the single easiest weapon to play against. It’s designed to aoe stun people in zerg balls. If you’re getting owned by war hammer and telling others to “get gud” … I don’t know what to tell you.

I am arguing for deeper design and combat. Maybe my specific suggestion was stupid and might not work at all. I don’t know. I didn’t give it much thought. The idea, though, is that these type of spammy abilities that do nothing but circumvent core combat design in new world, without risk, is bad for the game. Being able to just soak all game (except flame thrower lol) with no downside is bad design. And just wait until the GS comes with a similar mechanic.

The blood tree of rapier, while not perfect, is better than most people think. The problem is that the grace tree makes the weapon into a noob stick and let’s you play poorly and get away with it.

A LOT of design in new world let’s you play poorly and get away with it. And I should know, I’m exceptionally mediocre at PvP. :slight_smile:

Nobody is getting owned by a warhammer. But it is a nobrain weapon that requires no skill regardless.

I agree with the premise of your point though. I too wish that new world had deeper combat mechanics and dynamic.

Howver, it is where rapier getting singled out as a “crutch” as you like to call it where I take issue. Every single weapon in the game is easy. Many weapons are a crutch.

You telling me hatchet is not a crutch? spear? IG and VG? Hammer yet again.

at the end of the day not a single weapon in the game is difficult. The hardest weapon to use may be the blunderbuss. But even that still is not a very difficult weapon with a few hours of using it under your belt.

New worlds combat is designed around CC now. Any weapon that doesnt rely on stunlock is okay in my book and requires far more skill than the stunlock builds.

The rapier is a strong weapon which lets you 1vX. I agree very strongly that when a healer is using a rapier it is extremely frustrating.

But they need to nerf the healers. To suggest nerfing rapier to fix healers is insanity. Because if they nerf the rapier too much then this games pvp will be completely ruined. Then all you are left with is ungabunga smoothbrain stunlock pvp. Or to put it simply “trash pvp”

Maybe I can agree that to use the rapier as a “run away” stick does not require much skill. But to use the rapier offensively requires more skill than most weapons in this game, thats for damn sure.

Therefore suggesting to re-work the rapier only is also insanity to me. Then we need to re-work every weapon. Let’s take away 70% of the stuns in the game or at least introduce stun immunity by diminishing returns. If rapier needs a re-work then everything does. Because every weapon in the game is about as deep as a puddle

Yea I never understood why the ability is instant and even if it doesn’t go off there’s no punishment to the user for missing? Like they should do an exhaust animation for exactly 1 second at the end of riposte if it doesn’t go off, there’s no counter to it, they miss them either dodge or flèche away. Even if you shield bash them right after it doesn’t work cause they have 3-4 seconds of cc imunitiy afterwards.

Other skills if you miss you can counter, I can shield bash a mage doing his aoe circle before it goes off or his dash before he leaves, war hammer shockwave right after you dodge it there’s enough time to bash him. Riposte makes no sense

Partly my fault. I should have been more clear in my first post that I was speaking more philosophically and less practically. It just happened to be a thread about riposte. I wouldn’t make changes JUST to riposte.

I actually think riposte is fine as is, balance wise. The only “problematic” ability in rapier, imo, is fleche. And yet they’re changing evade. I dunno.

Getting cc’d three times is s breakout dodge and you need to time it perfectly.

It’s the most bullshit DMR I’ve ever seen.

Hard CC immunity is what is needed in such a cc heavy game

Yes, that is what I always thought…
Not landing the stun animation on Riposte should be punishable. The skill was overpowered and now they even buffed the rend ffs

  • You gain immunity and deny all the incoming damage
  • You land a freaking long stun
  • You put rend on everyone near you
  • You can pop it in an instant while bruiser type mellees have to do a perfect setup to land a Shocking wave or a Wrecking ball, as well as land a heavy hit with GA or WH.

Riposte > Evade > Dodge > Fleche is really broken as well. Because of it the offhand rapier meta is absolutely toxic. I salute all guys going for Tondo > Evade > Flourish & Finish instead of Riposte.

In conclusion, Riposte should be punishable: either you get that 2.5 sec stun on yourself if you don’t land it on anyone, or you burn your stamina bar to 0 and get exhaust.

Name 1 other ability in this game where you can go from completely standing still, then immediately the very next frame you are fully activated riposte.

Leap strike, Scream, Flamethrower, shieldbash, calamity counter, netshot, azoth shrapnel blast, flourish & finish, social distancing, rending throw, reap
All of these abilities^ have ridiculous fast animation and you can’t react to them or their initiation animation. You have to pre dodge (predict and dodge) them.

okay so I am a massive rapier fanboy as many probably know by now. But I do agree with this though. It is actually one thing I was always advocating for in the past I guess I’ve just gotten too used to it.

But there should be a punisheable element to not landing a riposte for sure. Make you stuck in the animation with some recovery frames so an opponent can punish it. That I am totally fine with.

Rapier should be a high risk high reward weapon that requires skill. I want the rapier to remain its ability to be evasive and deffensive as it is right now. But I wouldnt mind if they upped the skill level a little more so that people would stop crying about it so damn much.

Make it harder to use. I am fine with.

Actually in current live version of the game it takes the most amount of skill to play a bruiser in small scale pvp.

You have to bait stamina and be perfect with distance and timing on every ability to make it effective or anyone in light armor can counter you easily these days. Only effective at trading
Blows.

Bruisers are only consistently good in Zerg balls or paired with healers when their is too much going on for you to read and dodge a bruiser.
They take a lot of skill and set up to be deadly.
If your dying to a noob bruiser your just bad. They have the longest animation times that anyone with dex, or a rapier can counter effortlessly.
