Why no hatchet+shield?

your game has me so confused, hatchet has the ONLY other AoE Taunt skill, is one handed, yet can’t equip hatchet and shield? where’s the patch notes LOL, i want the only other AoE Taunt skill one handed weapon to have shield off hand.

For that matter, why the hell are some weapons marked 1-handed in the first place if you CAN’T USE THE SHIELD WITH THEM ?!

It would be neat if the shield was a unique weapon that had a slightly different (right-hand) skill tree depending on what weapon it was paired with. That would be a huge rework though because you’d also have to heavily modify the skill trees of the others you could pair it with (hatchet, spear, etc).

Well sure, if you (and as a S&S+Hatchet user I don’t) want to see hatchet damage and survivabilty perks (berserk for example) nerfed hard to compensate for vastly increased mitigation then why not?

Personally I’m waiting for Dual hatchet rather than Hatchet + Shield. Extra hatchet for Shield slot but you have to wear Full light armor set, Extreme melee dps but also soo fragile…

Edit : Also thinking same for dual dagger high burst damage and bow + quiver set.

hammer shockwave is 3m radius, great axe is single target same as spears taunt. the 2 Aoe taunts, defiant stance and rampage are the ONLY 8m Aoe taunts.

Maybe they where afraid to be compared to GuildWars2 ?? The ability system is already close, if they get compared, NewWorld looses miserably to GW2 in that area.

I want Spear n Shield or Pistol n Shield like we see on Ancients/Lost respectively. Then we can have Hatchet n Shield after.

Spear n Shield sounds like great point control, you can push enemies back, hit enemies 2 lines deep at control points

The pirates have the Pistol and Shield, so I imagine that as like a musket counter, maybe a healer secondary. E.g. you don’t deal as much damage as a musket, but you can shoot almost as far and gave the counter-shield to win the long range battle.

This was the first oddity that really bugged me only 1hr into New World and still bothers me.
Why wasn’t the whole weapon system modelled as left hand slot and right hand slot. Abilities for the right hand would have been buttons Q,R,F and left hand (or off-hand) Shift-Q, Shift-R, Shift-F. Same would go for the mouse-clicks.
That way we don’t even need a weapon swap key which nowadays only feels like a unnecessary inconvenience anyways. Thanks to the deletion of shared cooldowns we wouldn’t gain any more abilities and the redundant cooldown between weapon switches could be hardcoded into the abilities or animations as ramp-up-frames. That way AGS could create room for new combos like dual rapier, hatchet+shield or later possibly pistol+sword or ice+void gauntlet.
