Why There are Keys

The mutator orbs have really turned up the heat on the key/orb debate. Frankly, I am tired of people thinking they can get something for nothing in every game they play. I see most people want keys removed entirely or made so cheap they are essentially free and therefore the reason for them to exist becomes irrelevant. I know we live in a society these days where everyone wants everything for free, but that is simply not healthy for the game, and I think the key system not only INCREASES the game’s health and stability, but also makes it unique from other games.

First, especially after recent patches, expeditions are the No 1 way to increase gear score, get incredibly valuable loot, and BiS items. You want no orbs? Then be prepared for all that valuable loot to become irrelevant bc when you can grind out 5-10 expeditions in a day, your loot progression will be over in a week, shards will be valueless, and everyone will be howling about there being nothing to do (in game that already has painfully little to do right now, If I’m being honest.) The game NEEDS timegates in order to extend content and create a somewhat balanced experience. This is true of both hardcore and casual players. Hardcore need the timegate to slow them the heck down. Casuals shouldn’t be affected by gates because they don’t play enough for them to matter. If they DO matter and you consider yourself “casual” then maybe you aren’t that casual after all. If they do ever remove keys, they will reduce the rewards down so much that you will NEED to do the expedition 15 times in order to get anything good. Is that REALLY want you want? I rather prefer my run to be meaningful each time I do it.

Let’s take WoW for an example. Even the mythic key system provides essentially unlimited runs, but the loot from those runs is INCREDIBLY restricted by comparison to New World. You do a whole run, you get maybe one loot drop at the end. That is, no gold, no other items, nothing, at all, until your one drop at the end. Unless you are doing high level keys, that one piece of loot is probably trash anyway. Then at the end of a WEEK you get ONE piece of loot to match your HIGHEST key. Sure, you can run the dungeon fifty thousand times if you want, but you’re only going to get a few scraps of trash unless you bust your ass on level 12-15+ keys. New World’s tuning orb system allows them to make the loot in a single run very impactful without feeling like they are flooding the game with easy, powerful loot.

Second, it is NOT HARD to get an orb. I am an orb crafter primarily, I do it literally all the time. Granted, it’s not always thrilling gameplay, I mine a lot of rocks, but I actually do like challenging myself to solo 45 breaches or do them with a friend or two. I LOVE mangled heights both for loots from chests and faction tokens (recently discovered how great it was). I then can go and sell these keys to those who don’t want to partake in the craft. I usually run the key with them and sell the slots. This system creates a MARKET, which is unique to this game, and I love it. It is just like for gear. I keep my prices reasonable so that the average player is definitely making more from the run than they spend buying their slot. You DO NOT have to partake in the craft if you don’t want, there are endless keys available for sale (at least on my server, granted I am a higher pop). Stop whining and be willing to pay for something that is valuable. Keys are easily available and they are (now, after changes) not that expensive at all for what you get out of a single run.

I would even go on to argue that the key system is BETTER than both a free for all or a lockout. As stated, a free for all would require a dramatic lowering of the loot from a single run, so I guess you can spend way more time doing gen and laz than you will ever want to. A lockout would mean you can only progress so fast, hardcap, which I don’t think is nice for those who have the time and want to spend it. I do not see the key system as it is now creating ANY meaningful limitation on players. Instead, it opens up unique possibilities and incredible loot value that I argue does not exist in system that have a “free” access system (looking at you again, WoW).

The choice really comes down to this: Do you want orbs to stay and have a single run be very valuable to match or do you want orbs to be gone and have a single run be nearly worthless and have to run the expedition ten or twenty times more to get anything useful? Think on that for a while.

I’m trying to get Infamy or Dryad Spear since the game launched, 900 hours, a LOT of runs and nothing until now, yet I have to PAY to TRY to get these items.

Yeah, seems such a great system, go on defending it.

Gating content alienates players and causes them to quit or not buy the game in the first place.

Understand?

This will be solved next patch, legendary drops are much more common. Especially in mutated versions.

On the other hand if content isn´t gated the gap between casuals and hardcores will be insane. Also if you remove timegate people will be done with the game very soon and ask for another content so they can continue play 16 hours a day.

Basically, every MMO in existence has timegates, lockouts, keys, etc of some form or other. I think it is more noticable in New World for 2 reasons. First, there isn’t that much content to begin with, and second the orbs are rather costly, but as I stated this is balanced by the amount of loot gotten in a run (which has increased every patch and is going to increase even more with mutations).

What I “understand” is that you are wrong because these systems are everywhere in MMOs and whether you like them or not they don’t seem to stop people from buying the game or playing the game. They just cause people to whine on forums.

How can keys increase the health of the game, if most people quit before doing the end game dungeons?

The problem is not “gamers these days!”, the thing is that we got opinions. I don’t feel like wasting my time for what the devs feel like a privilege to run their mediocre dungeons, so I just play something more rewarding.

Besides, the devs can’t decide if they want people to up their WM through dungeons or not.

Say what? The only two activities where you get something for nothing in this game is zerging and Outpost Rush. Getting access to expeditions is just access, doing them takes more effort than most activities in this game.

This is a nonsense statement. We are not asking for the rewards but to just be able to access the dungeons. You are basically saying that getting access to a games content should not be “free” but you have to do boring grind for it. Which is another level of nonsense.

Yes this game needs it because of lack of content, which is the real issue. Basically the timegate on expeditions, the only challenging PvE content in the game, is because of lack of content where there is nothing else to do, beside running the same two expeditions over and over.

Say what? I consider myself a casual player and running Laz once and Genesis three times per week is certainly not enough for a casual player. That is like 4-5 hours of quality gaming per week.

You are assuming that gear is the only reason to run expeditions. It isn’t. I repeat, expeditions is the only challenging endgame PvE content in the game. There is basically nothing else to do beside joining a Zerg and be semi-afk while running portals or chests. So yes, I rather the give free access to expeditions and lower the drop rate than make it so we have nothing else to do but grind for those stupid keys.

LOL! This is categorically false! I rarely get anything useful from Expeditions. The loots purpose is only to raise Expertise, after that the majority is salvaged and maybe 2-3 items put on the marketplace.

And you would be wrong as orbs are almost universally hated so almost no one agrees with you.

Again, it seems you are doing expeditions only for loot and that is your issue. I play games for having a fun and challenging experience, not some virtual loot. That is just a means to an end. The fact is, for me, that Expeditions is the only real fun activity in this game. PvP is stunlock/instagibbed garbage and open world PvE is just about Zergs doing same content for almost no effort. So I want expeditions to be more accessible and more of them as they give me more challenge and fun than anything else. The loot is there just so you can do more difficult content, which is why mutated dungeons in principle is a good thing. It is just sad that they want to time-gate them as well and they forgot to include half of the other expeditions.

Agreed. I used to think “imagine paying to go into a dungeon”… then I realized they do not just give you the orbs every time like Bark does for example & each one takes time to even be able to craft, then time to keep gathering for it. Whether buying mats or spending time gathering it all & then crafting it all part by part, people making the orbs need some compensation for their effort & like you said, the runs are more valuable than what you ask people to chip in.

I used to view it as profiteering, in other words, yet now I see it as a community-building tool where you might keep playing with some people & community-driven where people are all “pitching in” together to the same goals. It is all a good thing. Massively better than just queuing for a dungeon all day long until, as you said, you end up with nothing but garbage & play-n-pray the next day & end up with garbage that day as well. Nobody has time for that. Even right now with the blessing of having a lot of time myself to play, I do not have time for that.

They nerfed the prices, not sure if you were alluding to that in your post or previous lowering of cost. In the PTR, now instead of for example, 50/50/50 motes for a part will be 30/30/30, in the event the PTR keeps this for retail.

Did they just reference gold in WoW. im laughing XD

Odd, apparently people do exist that like this tuning orb system.

Buddy I don’t want to do a virtual job .

Its a video game .

GAME you understand?

When you play monopoly do you have to shovel dirt for hours to roll the dice. No you just roll the dice.

You see dungeon you go in fight get loot.
Fighting is the only acceptable grind for that.

If you like this system so much go download some mobile games they are full of this systems.
Go away.

What impacts ? What dilusions do you have mate?

99% of loot is trash you salvage.

How long will it take to sell keys at the cash shop?

This Orb keys for expeditions is the most dumb system I have ever seen in a MMORPG. This is a perfect example of stockholm syndrome. Incredible…

If i was a dev and seen posts like the op here . I would add them right away , clearly someone is ready to be milked.

my post was a complain lol criticism.

I mean wtf have i been doing my whole life , i should have just made an mmo , it doesn’t need gameplay or anything . Just problems and then i add solutions to cash shop .
