You have a High Quality Scaling Problem

You have made a beautiful and fascinating game, and I have put hundreds of hours in to it with relish. Let there be no mistake, I have had a great time playing this game. I post here to lavish praise on a very solid launch, and also to offer feedback in the hopes that New World survive its predecessors.

As of a week or so ago, I hit lv60 in it and have spent the balance of the time exploring and learning a whole new world. I know you guys value concise, clear, and courteous feedback so I’ll keep this as clear and concise as I can.

  • Getting through Tempest with a random group of people your first time ever takes around 1 hour. At best.
  • Learning to do any damage at all to a hostile player in a 3v3 random PvP group takes 100 hours.

Now please, join me in picking a game that you loved from your childhood, one that really got you excited to log in every night, that also scaled this way.

I’ll wait.

I think it means that once you reach level 60 the game abruptly scales in difficulty and learning curve…maybe.
End game

Really? You really do not understand what the OP is talking about?

@sebass63 I completely agree with you. The way the game is currently structured, it’s only allows for “fun” for a select group of people.

And AGS wonders why their numbers suffer so greatly for this game. Their focus is on the tiniest portion of the overall playerbase. Wars are proof of this.

But… but there is no steep curve at 60 lol

You nailed it. After you ding, all of the game’s PvP content is gated behind either ratcheting your expertise up by 75-100 points or identifying a cheesy glass cannon setup (0-CON lightning musket comes to mind) and leveraging item level scaling to be marginally effective in OPR.

Fighting with a 100+ gearscore disadvantage is a deeply frustrating experience, and one I doubt I would have stuck around long enough to figure out if I hadn’t seen elements of this in other MMOs before. At 500 expertise if you haven’t thought too much about your perks, you will deal zero damage to a kitted 625 player, and they will delete you in three hits. Fresh 60s have no way to know definitively why they are getting dunked on so hard in PvP, and all the possible solutions require hours (or tens of hours) to test in-game. Is it the gear perks? Gotta spend thousands of gold trialing different perk combos to find out. Is it attribute distribution? Is it the expertise? Gotta spend fifty hours grinding genesis and ECRs to figure that out too. Did I pick the wrong weapon? Was I just fighting someone decked out in damage type counters specific to me? You can’t know because all you get to see is their weapon stats after the fact.

As far as suggestions that might help . . .

  • Add to the death screen the option to see all of the victorious player’s gear, rather than just their weapon
  • Scale gear to 625 in OPR and 3v3s

You know gear is scaled since Brimstone patch up to 600 and the difference between 600 and 625 is obviously there, but it’s sth like 60dmg per hit?
At least in 3v3 and OPR.
Obviously not in open world

That has not been my experience. But supposing the difference is as negligible as you claim, why keep it anyway?

The bolster is honestly unnoticeable.
Ive had multiple 3’s where im killing fresh 60’s in 2-3 normal attacks with my hatchet.
Didnt believe it so i lvled a new character, grabbed a 590 named bow drop, jumped in 3’s.
At a bolstered 600 with a 590 bow. Full draw / speced headshot with vorpal crit for ~ 3k - 3.5ish on a light opponent.
Hopped back to the main, used the same bow at 625.
Full draw headshot at land +/- around 5.8-6.4k.

The bolsters either broken / not working at all, or just doesnt matter.
The pre BIS/625 sheep are cannon fodder.

It was like this pre Brimstones. It’s definitely not now. I’m playin all day with 500 gear atm, it works great
